Grandmother Needs
Bedding For Tots
She's Caring For
A Macon County grandmoth
er who recently took over the
care of three small children
badly needs same bedding and
furniture, Mrs. Eloise H. Potts,
county welfare officer, said this \
week.
A mattress for a double bed,
or two cots and pads, plus some
quilts or blankets, are the most
urgent needs, so that there will
be some place for the children
to sleep.
In addition, a used kitchen
cabinet would be useful.
Persons who have any of these
things that they would be will
ing to donate are asked to get
in touch with Mrs. Potts.
Safety specialists warn against
pull-chain switches unless they
contain an insulating link or
cord.

LEGISLATURE
McGlamery And 3 Other
Solons W rite Letter
To Gov. Cherry
Herbert A. McGlamery, Macon
County representative, has join
ed three other state legislators
in a letter to Governor Cherry,
urging him to call a special
session ,of the general assembly
to consider pay increases for
teachers and other state em
ployes.
Signers of the letter, in addi
tion to Mr. McGlamery, were
Rep. Bruce A. Elmore, of Swain
county, and Senator Frank M.
Parker and Rep. Hency C. Fish
er, both of Buncombe. Mr Mc
Glamery and Mr. Elmore both
are presently living in Asheville.
The letter to Governor Cherry
cited the fact that the state is
receiving more revenue than
was anticipated and the in
creased cost of living for teach
ers and other state employes
as reasons why salary increases
should be considered at this
time.
The text of the letter follows:
"For some time it has been
evident, according to the reports
of the revenue department, that
the revenue return to the state
has far exceeded the anticipated
yield.
"It likewise was apparent that
the school teachers and state
employes of North Carolina were
being woefully and inadequate
ly paid for their services and
it also was evident that it was
the disposition of the majority
of the members of the legisla

ture to increase the salaries of
these indispensable servants of
the state the maximum the state
revenue would permit.
"Now that it is an establish
ed fact that the state is in a
position to further increase the
salaries without detriment to
the very comprehensive program
of the state, we the undersigned
members of the 1947 session of
the legislature, representing
Buncombe county or residing
here, desire to take this means
of urging you as chief execu
tive of this state to call a special
session of the legislature in
order that we can further in
crease the compensation of
these worthy and deserving serv
ants of the people."
An average of 983 pedestrians
