Powell of Bradenton, Fla., have announc ed the engagement and ap proaching marriage of their daughter, Miss Shirley Louise Powell, to Herbert Leslie Mung er, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. 8. Munger, of Highlands. The date of the wedding has been set for Easter Sunday, March 28, at 3 o'clock In the afternoon In the Bradenton Methodist church. 1 The Rev. Joe A. Tolle will be the officiating minister. Miss Powell was graduated in 1945 from the Bradenton High school, where she served on the "Macohi" staff and was a mem ber of the English club and the History club. At present she 1s employed by the Peninsula Tel ephone company. Mr. Munger is a graduate of the Highlands High school. He spent 27 months in the navy, serving In the South Pa cific during the war. He holds a position with the American Oil company in Sarasota, Fla. DAVISES HAVE DINNER HONORING BRIDAL COUPLE Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Davis en tertained with a dinner Sun day night honoring Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Edward Anglin, of Asheville, whose marriage was an event of March 6. Mrs. Ang lin is the former Miss Evelyn Alley, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. H. M. Alley, of Asheville and Highlands. Warren has returned to Highlands and has opened her home, "The Hedges", on Satulah mountain. Miss Maxie Wright, student at Western Carolina Teachers' College, spent a recent week end here with her mother, Mrs. Helen Wilson, and family, and had as her guest Miss Lowe Alley, a fellow student. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hector, of New York and Miami, and Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Farnsworth, of Memphis, Tenn., were among the guests registered at the Potts house the past week. Mrs. Bertha M. Jones, of Spartanburg, S. C., was the week-end guest of Mr. and .Mrs. Frank B. Cook. Dr. and Mrs. William A. Mat thews and family have return ed from a two weeks' vacation in Florida. M. S. Irivexs? who helped to make he trip possible for the chil- ! iren. i Legion Oratory Finals Set For Tonight At 7:30 Finals in the high schtrol oratorical contest sponsored by the Highlands Memorial post of the American Leg ion, postponed from last week, will be held at the school h theatre tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 o'clock. The public is invited to attend. Competing in the finals are, Joyce Burnette, Marie ? Talley, Ann Anderson, and Arnold Keener. Robert Zahner Initiated Into Honor Fraternity . Robert Zahner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenyon B. Zahner, of Highlands, was one of 51 stu dents recently initiated at Duke university into the Phi Eta Sigma honorary scholastic frat ernity for freshmen men. Victory Medal Presented Tc J. H. Crawford A Victory medal was delivered recently to James Henry Craw ford, of Highlands, it was an nounced this week by Chief J. F. Bird, of the navy. Chief Bird also announced that David W. Baty, of High lands, has been accepted for enlistment in the navy. Mr. Bird will be in Macon County each Mohday during the summer, for recruiting and to provide general information about the navy, he said. David son, the Highlands Presbyterian church is rehearsing for a can tata to be presented at the church on Good Friday at 7:30 p. m. DEPOSITS MADE ON FIRST DAY TOTAL $52235 Full Banking Facilities Are Now Available To Community The Highlands branch of the Jackson County Bank opened for business Monday morning, replacing the teller's window the Sylva institution has maintain ed in Highlands for the past 14 years. During the day, 63 depositors deposited a total of $52,23558, it was announced John H. Dewey, formerly of New York City, who is building a home on Whiteside, was the first new depositor. The branch, providing all the regular banking facilities, is be- ' ing operated by a staff of three? J. W. Williamson, who comes to Highlands from the Florida National Bank, of Lake land, Fla., cashier; Miss Marian Norton, assistant cashier; and Miss Caroline Hall, bookkeeper. Miss Norton and Miss Hall have handled the teller's window previously maintained in High lands by the Jackson County bank. The local loan and executive committee for the branch bank is made up of C. J. Anderson, F. A. Edwards, and F. H. Potts. A number of the officials of the Sylva institution were pres ent for the formal opening. The Jackson County Bank, with total resources of more than four and a half million dollars, is headed by S. W. En loe, president. R. L. Ariail is ex ecutive vice-president; E L.
