Feed Hens When Eggs Are Scarce . _ s By the middle of May, North Carolina's supply of eggs will be much less plentiful than now, says T." T. Brown, extension poultry specialist at State col lege. When spring came, Mr. Brown explained, farmers stopped sell ing their hens, which began laying rather heavily However, with no leed except corn and some spring grass, these hens will not continue to lay very long. Soon most of the layers in these farm flocks will stop laying and go broody or molt. Then the market will be flood ed with hens instead of eggs As a result, hen prices will drop and egg prices will go up. Farmers seem to forget at this season of the year that egg prices do not remain low all the year but start going up in early summer and remain re latively high during the sum mer, tall, and winter, the spe- I cialist said. Farmers are showing little' interest in growing out a crop of pullets for next sea son's layers. Instead, many of ttyem are keeping a few old hens which will be molting or out of production, or at least I in very light production, dur ing the highest price egg sea ! son next fall. That will mean j scarce aggs and low producer profits, Mr. Brown stated. Although commercial and semi-commercial producers are going ahead with normal size Hocks, the farm producers with 150 hens or less are reducing their flocks sharply this year, the extension worker declared Since these flocks are - the | source of the greater part of j the egg supply in North Car olina, Indications are that eggs J will be scarce during the sum mer and fall of 1948 and the | winter and spring of 1949.
