Fellowships Awarded
For Summer Work
At Laboratory
Seven investigators represent- I
Ing five colleges and universities
have been awarded research
grants to pursue studies at the
Highlands Biological laboratory i
this summer. The grants, pro- !
vlded annually by triends in
terested in the promotion oi
research, were awarded as :
follows:
Dr. Hiden Cox, Agnes Scott
college, received a Col. and Mrs
John S Sewell fellowship to in
vestigate "The Comparative
Anatomy of the Ericales and
Related Groups". While a stu
dent at the University of North
Carolina, Dr Cox worked at the
laboratory in 1939 on water
molds. A recent issue of The
American Midland Naturalist
carried a paper by Dr. Cox on
the comparative anatomy of the
rhododendrons.
Dr. James J. Friauf, Vander
bilt university, who served ai>
director of the museum last
summer, was awarded the Min
nie D. Warren fellowship to in
vestigate "The Orthoptera o.
the Highlands Plateau". Dr
Friauf is well known for his in
vestigations of grasshoppers anc
related forms. He has collected
and studied specimens from
Florida, Michigan, Tennessee
and Mexico.
The Leonee Fremaux Wall
fellowship again was awarded
to Dr. Eugene P. Odum, Uni
versity of Georgia. Dr. Odum
will continue his study of the
birds of the area, with partic
ular reference, to a "Critical
Evaluation of the 'Territory
Mapping' Method as Used to
Determine Absolute Abundance
of Birds". Dr. Odum was recent
ly elected vice-president of the
Association of Southeastern Bio
logists. At that meeting he re
ported work done at Highlands
last summer.
Dr. Lewis Berner, University
of Florida, will receive the
Margaret Cannon Howell fel
lowship to study the mayflies of
the area. Dr. Berner has puo
lished many articles on the
mayflies of Florida and Ten
nessee, and he has participated
in many mosquito surveys.
The Ward fellowship, recently
established by Ward's Natural
Science Establishment, Roches
ter, N. Y., will b2 shared by
two investigators from Emory
university, Robert E. Gordon
and Richard Smith. These
young men will study the sala
manders of the area. Both have
collected and studied the sala
manders and reptiles from the
coastal plain and piedmont areas
of Georgia.
H. V. Autry, University of
Georgia, will receive a Sewell
fellowship to continue his work
oh "The Distribution and Eco
logy of Small Mammals on the
Highlands Plateau". Mr Autry
has served as research assistant
to Dr. Odum and is considered
well qualified to investigate the
mammals of the arei

Carolina farms on January 1, j
1948, was estimated at 269,000, |
