Forrester, of Niagara Falls, N Y, who in troduced this chemical test as an aid in law enforcement to curb the menace of the drink ing driver. The intoximeter, which is now in use by the state police in Michigan and belaware, and by local police in Lansing, Mich igan, and Oak Ridge, Tenn., en- I ables the officer to obtain an on-the-spot approximation ol the level of blood alcohol. The breath . of the apprehended driver, which is exhaled into a rubber balloon, passes through a mass of glass particles mois tened with a red oxidizing solu tion. If alcohol is present, the color is destroyed and the num ber of seconds needed to do this indicates the percentage of al cohol in the blood. Thus the officer making the apprehen sion knows whether the driver was actually under the influence of alcohol. According to Dr. Forrester, the instrument Would prove helpful in determining whether a driver suspected of drunken driving were actually under the influ ence, or suffering from a heart attack, or diabetes, or other dis ease, which might effect his driving. The intoximeter is essentially a simple instrument and the cost of a single test is about $2.50. The device consists of three tubes. One tube gives the officer an on-the-sopt declara tion of blood content. Another tube, which is sealed and sent to the state chemist or toxi cologist, contains an actual sample of "breath" which the alcohol content; and the third tube shows the amount of breath and moisture in the sample.
