LITTLE GAINED Selective T ree Marking And Cutting Has Proved Worth Tempted to unload their tim ber stock while prices are high, many Tar Heel farmers not only are ruining their future timber crop but also are losing money by rushing to sell at the first opportunity, believes John L. Gray, assistant extension for ester at State college. As ah example, Mr. Gray says many farmers agree to sell every tree above a certain size, often specifying a 10-inch stump di ameter limit or even smaller. In most cases, he points out, this is equal to setting 'no limit at all, since most trees below this size will not make one 14 or 16-foot sawlog large enough to saw out a clean 2x4. According to Mr. Gray, two Edgecombe county farmers have found by experience that selec tive marking and cutting of trees improves their timber stand for future use and also enables them to obtain maxi mum income from their sales. Assisted by Mr. Gray, the farmers checked their entire 100 acres of tlmberland. Each tree to be sold was marked with two spots of yellow paint, one at the stump line for checking purposes and the other about shoulder high on the trunk for the convenience of the cutters. A record was kept of the board feet content of each tree. They invited all buyers to . make offers, and the best one I was accepted. Terms of the sale ( were covered in a written con tract which protected the un marked trees by placing a double price on them. Now, even though one good sale has been made, fine, straight, thrifty trees still cover the woods to grow to premium size and to seed the openings in with young trees.
