ANTI-POLIO I STEPS TAKEN IN HIGHLANDS 3 Pcint Program Adopted To Keep Area Fre; From Disease A three-point program has been adopted by Highlands "u> protect its citizens and summer visitors", it has been announc ed. There has been no polio in Highlands and vicinity this year, and authorities explained they are seeking to prevent any cases. The three points in the pro gram: 1. All children under 16 years of age arriving in Highlands from polio epidemic areas will be quarantined lor two weiKs, and hotels are requested not to provide accommodations lor such such persons. 2. Garbage Is being picked up dally, and residents and business establishments are being requir ed to place their garbage In closed containers. 3. The town dump and garb age trucks are being sprayed with DDT. The program was adopted ! .st Thursday night at a joint meet ing of the town board, directors of the chamber of commerce, medical authorities; and a spe cial committee of business men. ; Members of the latter group are Charles Anderson, O. Electric Pumps , In Rural School Well* Favored By Krickt An unusual feature for a grand jury report was the rec ommendation made recently by the Transylvania county grand Jury that electric water pumps be installed in the wells of all that county's rural schools, with a view to providing more sani tary water systems. The report has a special In terest tor Macon county, since t the grand Jury foreman was Ver non H. Frlcks, a former reaiuuui i of this county. The grand Jury visited every school in Transylvania, the re port explained. Out of those visits, came the recommendation for electric water pumps in the wells of rural schools. Four-H club members in this community, interested in forestry, are eligible to compete for these awards which include: A gold medal for the state winner. One of four regional $200 cash scholarships. "Farmers own a greater share of the nation's woodlands than any other group. With our uses for wood increasing almost daily, we must see to it that our harvests of trees are sufficient to meet the Deeds of our growing population. This means markets for wood, and this means greater and permanent opportunities for farmers who manage their woodlands for con tinuing forest crops." National surveys show that farmers own 30 per cent of the nation's 460 million acres of com mercial forest land. Other owners of small tracts own 27 per cent. Medium and large owners have about 18 per cent of the total, and the public owns about 25 per cent.
