Backache mZE2tES$?U cnfL QuU.ii.il"' Here's Fishermen's Club That Bars Lying; Substitutes Official Weights WILMINGTON. - Thirty-three years ago sport fishermen of this coastal town decided that, while fishing and lying about fishing made a good sport, the truth was even more fun. So they organized the New Han over Fishing club, which today, with over 1,200 members, is the largest such organization in the world. The club has stimulated sport fishing greatly In Southeastern North Carolina, but it has cut down on the lying to a cala mitous extent, because the club's many official weighing stations, which are strung all up and down the coast, put the matches on record, and the ones that get away are not even recognized for purposes of small and polite talk. Almost every "serious" fish erman in town is a member? not to mention a lot of fisher women? with the roster includ ing public officials, stevedores, , clerics, and sub-debe, and the organization can throw a lot ol weight around here. While organized primarily to promote good fellowship, to encourage skillful fishing, and to support legislation protecting game fish, the club's most conspicuous ac tivity is centered in its annual tournament. Scores of priezi, ranging from cash to unlikely merchandise, are offered. In Iht, past, the prizes ha. e ranged from a half-ton of coal to 10 free shaves. Merchants are en thusiastic supporters of the con test and the club. Most important, however, has been the record-keeping work of the secretary over the years. Wilmingtonians are pretty sat isfied that they know the larg est channel bass ever taken here was a 53-pounder, the laige^t blue a 10'A-pounder, and the biggest striped bass a fellow hefting 35 pounds, 2 ounces Territory of the club covers more than 100 miles of sea coast and many Inland waters, membership now Includes many visiting firemen who visit this area for sport. The annual meeting is so well attended that it is held In the county courthouse or city hall, and usually some of the charter members show up, Including veteran Burke H. Bridgers, club historian, whose enthusiasm epi tomizes the gorup's spirit. Bridgers, Instead of sticking to old fashioned methods, employs balloons and kites to take his bait into shoaly waters unat tainable by boat But whether from boats, in the surf, off piers, with or without kites, Wilming ton undoubtedly is the flshing est town in this section, and the people say they are, year around, the fishlngest people in the world. I Two Mecklenburg County dairymen, Jap and Frank Cath : i y, have lound that they can i-.akt ccncreto fence posts for ' their pastures at a cost of less 1 than $1 per post. They use a mixture of/ one part cement, two parts sand, and four parts gravel, ajid lutnlorce the posts with scrap steel. Tobacco Importing countries of the world have a decided preference lor leaf grown In the United States. This prefer ence was increased during World War II by the distribute n aboard of American-type ciga rettes and other tobacco piod ucts containing United States leaf. The use of television as a means of bringing to farm and city people the benefits of agri cultural and home economics research will be the subject of an exploratory study under the Research and Marketing act.
