Less Than Half Of N. C School Rooms Ar? Large ?nough Slightly l?u than half the elementary school classrooms in North Carolina are adequate in size, according to the elemsntary education committee of the State Education commission, This committee has completed a study o f 305 elementary schools In 16 administrative units of the state by vi ..ts. check lists, and examination of the files of the State Depart ment of Public Instruction. The committee found that only about half of the class rooms and halls are neat and attractive, adequate handwash ing facilities are available in less than half the schools, only half the schools have enough space for hanging pupils' wraps, and three-fourths of the schools have practically no space tor science collections and adequate storage of instructional supplies. Chairs and tables for group work are available in only one third of the schools. Approximately two-thirds of these schools have adequate playground space, but omy 15 per cent of the same schools provide play equipment. About one-third of the schools have beautified their outdoor sur roundings with shrubs, trees and grass, the committee found. If prepackaged fresh vege tables are kept at a temperature of 42 degrees F. during market ing operations, they will keep from two to three times longer than If no attention is given tc refrigeration. Farm Trainees Pay Visits To Farms, Plants And Test Demonstrations Four groups of veteran farm trainees, comprising a total of 194 veterans, recently took time from their work and studies to visit farms, factories, and test demonstrations in order to get a broader view of the overall picture of farming. The trainees were divided in to four groups, each under the direction of veteran instructors. Group 1, composed of 52 men, under the direction of Siler Slagle, Robert Parker, and S. W. Mendenhall visited the North Georgia Experiment station, where they studied pasture ex periments in orchard grass and Ladino clover. The second group, composed of 47 veterans, visited the Mountain Experiment' station at Waynesville, where they were shown demonstrations in pas ture improvement, the results of better breeding in poultry and dairy cattle, and a field of Turkish tobacco. They also vis ited the purebred Hereford farm of M. O. Galloway, in Haywood County. Fred Hannah and Har ry Kinsland were in charge of this group. The third group, under the direction of Max Parrish and Ed Bradley, visited the Ches terfield feed mills in Asheville, where they saw livestock feed made, and Inspected the poul try dressing plant of the Farm ers Federation. More than 6,000 chickens are dressed at this plant per day. They also visited the Southeastern Breeders as sociation stud barn at Ashe ville. E. J. A barn where hay is cured by the electrc blower system was inspected at the farm of L. Simmons. Fine baby beef, own ed by Parker Gregory, were shown the veteran farm train ees next. At the farms of Owen Ammons and Robert Taylor the group Inspected some fine fields of hybrid corn. A field, owned by Dr. Edgar Angel, where intensive preparations had been made for the sowing of alfalfa was the next stop. Hybrid corn and beef cattle of exceptional merit on the farms of Cecil Crawford and Bryan Setser also were shown to the. group. The trip was concluded with a visit to the Killian Here ford tann, owned by Dr. Frank M. Killian of Franklin. Here the group viewed the excellent | herd of polled Hereford beef J cattle being raised there. Doctor: "I don't like to bring , this up, but that check you gave me came back."
