TO GUARD THE PEOPLES RIGHTS AND PROPERTIES IN TIME OF EMERGENCE Poultry Raising Shows Large Growth Here In The Last Ten Years By S. W. MENDENHALL County Agent Ten years ago this county had only one poultry owner who had a flock of 100 birds. Now there are 60 flock owners having from 100 to 500 birds. Hatching eggt are being sold from these flocks bringing in to Macon County over $150,000 per* year. Hatch eries from this state, Ueorgia and South Carolina are anxious to purchase eggs In this county berause of the high hatchabilitj due to our cool climate. 'Farm ers could be selling ten times as many eggs as are being pro duced at the present tme il the proper strains of New Hampshire birds were being kept, housed and properly fed. With fee4? prices coming down and the price of hatching eggs remaining good it will be to the advantage of all flock owners to enlarge their flccks and other farmers who like to work with poultry to get into the business. One hatchery that is buying eggs in our county is anxious to get as many baby chicks started in January as possible. Orders should be placed for these chicks immediately. During September orders were taken for 2,000 twelve week old New Hampshire birds. On Oc tober 19 these birds aiTived and were placed on the fajms of A. G. Kinsland, D. L. Clark, Carol Reynolds, W. F. Potts, Garland Shepherd, Robert Hines, Mrs. Effie Deal, Edd Du vall, Mrs. Lawrence Ramsey, C. B. Kinsland and Charles Ferguson. The poultry industry In Macon County is growing be cause it furnishes a good in come to the farmer who handl.s them properly. Forest Service To Operate 5 Fire Towers In This Area With the coming of the fall fire season, five lookout stations will be operated in this area by employees of the United States forest service. Serving as lookouts this year will be "Uncle Bob" Gibson, on Cowee Bald; John McKinney, on Satulah Mountain; Mack Evitt, at the Yellow Mountain station; George Beddingfield, on Sassafrass mountain; and Med ford Caldwell, on the Pinnacle overlooking the Coweeta experi ment station. All lookout stations are equip ped with radio sets for sending and receiving messages and some stations have telephone communications also. District ranger John Wasllik stressed the fact that the forest service would, as in the past, :ount heavily on the continued support and assistance of the Forest users to help Ijeep down fire this year. He pointed out that there are 2,000 forest users scattered through Macon, Jackson, and Swain counties who are cutting acid wood, saw timber, and lo cust posts on land under gov ernment fire protection. The acid wood alone brings in a yearly Income of more than $400,000, he said. With this in mind, he urged the woodsman to save this payroll by helping to keep down forest fires. FOR SALE? One used wood heater $23, One used coal or wood range $60. One used oil circulator heater $84. All In good condition. Martin Electric Com pany. Phonel07. Q14 ? 4tc? A recent study by the Amer ican Road Builders' asjociai on reveals that those favcr.te spooning sites for grandma and grandpa have more than proved their worth, both economically and through records of service. Favorite subject of landscape painters and a delight to ami- I teur and professional photog- 1 raphers, these antiques of the road have by no means passed their prime of uselulness, ARBA learned in its survey. Contrary to popular Lelief, they did not originate in th - United States. The first in this country was built in Pennsyl vania about 1771. From there, the strain spiead to New Eng land, where it flowered abjut 20 years later. Each of individual design, they are found on sec ondary roads from Maine to Oregon, and in other wooded sections of the world through out the European and Asiatic continents. One of the oldest on record Is located 1 Switzerland. BIRTHS Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Cabe have announced the birth of a daughter, Bonnie Delores, at their home in Franklin.
