quarter, with Keener and Henry
sweeping the ends and Thomas
picking up needed yardage on
off tackle plays, and first drove
to the 18-yard line before losing
the ball on downs.
Trailing by a 7-0 score and
with less than three minutes of
the half left to play, the Pan
thers ook the ball on their 45
yard line and drove Jor a touch
down. Henry and Keener aver
aged about 10 yards a try on end
runs, with Keener being es
pecially effective on a pitch out
play. Thomas drove through
center twice and picked up five
yards both times.
Franklin reached the ten-yard
line with less than a minute
remaining, when Archer stepped
back and fired his first pass
of the gime, over the left side
of his line. White, who was
covered by three Bryjon City
men, leaped high In the air

catch and fought his way acrou

The second half was a ha'd

teams having several long runs
called back by penalties. Once,
during the third quarter, Frank

25-yard line, but lost the ball
on a fumble.
Midway the fourth quarter
came one of he deciding plays
when Bryson City kicked from
the 32-yard line. Keener took

Timely Farm Question*
Q. Tobacco acoounta lor wall
over halt of North Carolina'!
cash farm income. But, from
the economic standpoint, hew
important Is tobacco to the
nation as a whole?
A. Tobacco was the earliest
profitable export crop from the
Americas. Spaniards flrit ship
ptd It eommerelally to EUrope
from what Is now the United
States la 1S31. Since that time
the crop has increased In Im
portance until It now brings
growers more than one billion
dollars each year. From the
standpoint of Federal revenue,
in the five-year period covering
the fiscal years 1942-46 re
ceipts by the XJ. S. Govern
ment from tobacco and re
lated product* averaged moie
than 950 million dollars each
year, in addition most of the
states collected large sums in
excise taxes on sales of tobacco
products, The Federal treasury
receives more direct revenue
from tobacco than from all
other crops combined.
Q. When band placement of
fertilizer Is used on tobacco and
the fertilizer Is placed on only
one side of the plant, will re
sults be satisfactory?
A. The answer Is no. Tobacco
is one of the most exacting of'
all plants. For most crops, the
type of machine that places a
band of fertilizer at one side
of the row gives results just
as satisfactory as from a band
on each side. But with most
types of tobacco, research
shows that a one-sided appli
cation frequently produces one
sided growth effects.
City was unable to penetrate
beyond the Franklin 30-yard
standing play of Bob Parriih,
line, mostly due to the out
who undoubtedly was the best
d?fi?si,ve man tog field.
While Parrlsh was the out
standing defensive ball player,
Keener led Franklin on the of
fensive. Henry also was a con
sistant ground gainer and was
an effective blocker. Other men
who played good ball for Frank
lin included Pattlllo, Thomas,
Archer, Huggins, White, Pen
land, and Brown.
