W. Mendenhall said this week. He urged flock owners to cull all early moulters and broody hens as a means of insuring the most efficient egg production and reducing feed costs. Mr. Mendenhall explained that the peak of the egg pro duction season is now past, and that broody hens will consume as much feed as producing hens. Moreover, he added, early moulters are 'notoriously poor egg producers, since they take longer to moult than those that start late, and are non-produc ers for longer periods than late summer and early fall mou'.ters. Meanwhile, la Atlanta, Karry Wlee, poultry marketing ?p? ciallst " of the Production and Marketing administration's poul try branch, gave strong backing to the local county agent's ad vice. "It's Just plain good business", Wise declared, "to stop keeping the hens that aren't keeping you. The markets are short on good (at hens, and prices are good. All two-year old hens should be culled and 'their places In the farm f'ocks given to young birds. It's an accepted Tact that pullets are more prof itable layers than hens. Now that hot weather Is here, extra care should be taken to Insure that eggs are gathered frequent ly, properly stored, and market ed under the best possible con ditions. Better eggs will mean better prices." Of the two-year-old hens, Mr. Mendenhall said "such birds are probably producing so few eggs now that the weather has turn ed hot that they are iwt paying From where I sit ... 61/ Joe Marsh I But Curly "Knows What The Score Is!" Was over at Doc Sherman's drug store listening to the World Series on the radio. Curly Lawson wan ders in and says: "How about a chocolate malted, Doc?" "Sorry, Curly," says Doc, "can't make you a malted for a while yet." "What's the idea?" Curly asks. "Well," says Doc, "most of i the folks want to hear the game and the mixer makes too much noise." Curly thinks a moment I and says, "Okay with me, Doc ? ! I'll take a chocolate soda!" This shows how tolerant folks can be. Doc showed his respect for how the majority felt; Curly was big enough not to insist on his malted even though h? doesn't hap pen to be fond of baseball. From where I sit, willingness to respect the other people'i feelings is important in a Democracy. If we're tolerant of a person's like for baseball or a glass of temper ate beer, we've come a long way on the right road .. . . the road to a better America, that is!
