(OwMNtoi) _ At Christmas time the wUe man nV the young child tpA ffltt down and worshipped him, and whan they had opened thai} treasures, they presented unto hm gifts, gold, l ran kin - cense anil inyrrh. Ah Christmas time the shepherds heard voices from Heaven saying, "Peace on Earth, Oood Will Toward Men." At Christmas time hostile armies, arrayed to the death, as If by common consent, have thrown down their arms, and erstwhile bitter foes have embraced each other as brothers. At Christmas time the Mother's lullaby is sweeter, the Father's care is deeper, hearts that have grown callous from the wear and care of the year, even the hardest, seem to beat more gently and for a day mankind seems to become aware that kindness is stronger than hate, that gentleness is stronger than force, and that love is stronger even than death. F or Christmas time Is that day in each year when we come neaier to obeying the impulse to follow the principles of Him in Whose honor the day is set apart. This impulse we call the Spirit of Christmas. Some day ? beyond the horizon of our comprehension, per haps, but some day ? every man, woman and child under Heaven, by obeying this impulse, will ce'ebrate Christmas every day In the year and every moment in the day. Then, and net until then, will the mission of Him who taught in the Hills of Galilee be completed. the Christmas Seal sale cam paign, repoited that to date $507 worth of seals had been so d. H urged persons who wish to purchase seals to forward their money to him or Wayne Faulkner as soon as possible so that the drive ran be completed in the near future. Frank B, Duncan, club presi dent, announced that plans were being made to hold a New Year's dance at the roof garden of the ' Skyway hotel, the net proceeds to be used for blind worfc in Macon County. HAYWOOD MAN OUT FRONT FOR CORN CHAMPION Grows 141.3 Bushels Per Acre; 4-H Boy Ls Runner-Up An ofiicial yield of 141.3 bijsh els per acre put a Hay wood county farmer out in front In the race for the 1949 corn-growing Championship, Dr. E. R. Collins, agronomist for the State College Extension serv ice, reports. Unless a higher yield is reported within the next few weeks, Dwight Will iams, of Waynesville, will be come North Carolina's new corn champion. The Haywood county farmer grew his high-yielding corn on rich bottomland. He fertilized with two tons of stable manue and 200 pounds of 7-7-7 per acre at planting time. On May 6, he seeded Dixie 17 hybrid in 42 inch rows, spacing it 12 Inches in the drill. He side-dressed twice with 100 pounds of ANL per acre each time. Runner-up in the state-wide contest to date is a Wayne county 4-H club boy, Dale Gainey, whose measured acre yielded 139.3 bushels. He used hybrid N. C. 27, fertilizing with 2105 pounds of 6-8-6 at plant ing and side-dressing with 942 pounds of soda. Dr. Collins says this field was obviously over-fertilized. But he adds that even with ex cessive fertilizer, the cost per bushel, including labor, was only 82 cents. "This again emphasizes that high yields are generally the most profitable yield*," he said. The agronomist added that the contest is still open. Farm ers who think they have excep tional yields, should contact their county agent. If the agent thinks the corn is promising enough, he will arrange for an official harvest. The North Car* olina Foundation Seed Produc ers offer a 100-d?llar savings bond for the highest yielding fields in each of three areas mountains, piedmont and costal plain. A second 100-dollar bond will be awarded the highest of the three as the state winner.
