100,060 Pine* Being Planted In Foreit * "Ranger District .The planting of more than 100,000 white pines was started In the Nantahala forest ranger dlatHet early in March, accord ing -to W. J. Gray, district rang er; - ? - Ice and snow durin? the month seriously hampered planting activities, the ranger said, and only about one-third of the project has been com pleted. The project is under the su pervision of Eckle Roland, of Aquone. Funds for replanting cut areas in the forest are earned through deductions from forest stumpage receipts. besigned primarily for the betterment of forest sales areas where timber has bean cut, the planting proiect will produce more wood and often a better quality timbe., Mr. Oray said. In . addition to . improving the forest, the ranger pointed out that planting funds provide em ployment for local people, add ing to the income of the com munity. Fire protection is essential for the establishment of an adequate amount of youns tim ber, he said, and fires are de cidedly adverse to the best in terests of the people. Finish 5 Miles Of Road Work In Macon During March The State Highway commis sion completed five miles of road work in Macon County during March under the $200, 000,000 bond Issue program. Grading, draining, and surfac ing with traffic-bound macadam were completed on the Miller road for 1.15 miles, on the Richie road for 0.7 of a mile, on Shoal Creek road for one mile, and on the Edwards road for 0.35 of a mile. Stabilizing and strengthening were completed on the follow ing: Evans Creek, 0.2; Gnat Ridge, 1.2; Flat Mountain road, 0.1; Blllie Cabin, 0.1. Miss Phillips Honor Student At College Miss Anne Phillips, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Phillips, of Franklin, was one of 22 sen iors at Peace college, Raleigh, who made the second quarter honor roll, according to the school public relations depart ment. Newcomb, watershed management expert, from Reg ion 8 headquarters of the na tional lorest service In Atlanta, Oa., spent last week in the Nantahala forest Inspecting area watersheds. The Inspection, Mr. Newcomb said, dealt with all forest re sources that etfect water, and is the first step toward setting up a watershed management plan In the Nantahala forest. Tne Du.pose of such a plan, he said, Is to produce a max imum amount of nign quality water. Woodrow Cunningham Is Serving In Korea Pvt. Woodrofw Cunningham has arrived in Korea, his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron P. Cunningham, of Franklin, Route 2, have learned. Pvt. Cunning ham, a veteran of World War 2, enlisted in October, 1950.
