This Week With Macon County Agents By T. H. FAGG On the recent annual Macon County Farm tour, between 300 and 400 farm men and women observed a number of interest ing and practical farm and home practices. One stop on this tour was on the farm of Paul Smith, of Franklin, Route 2. Here Mr. Smith has one of the best dem onstrations of soil conservation on a farm as a whole to be found in the county. He pur chased this farm in October of 1948. There Is a total of 32 acres In the farm. When he purchased the farm It was grown up in broom sedge and running briars, and the hill sides were very badly eroded and gullied. Along the branch banks was a wilderness of alders. There was no grass and clover on the farm and the fence that For HOUSE WIRING Call JAMES P. WURST Licensed Electrician Phone 66 Franklin, N. C. 'was there vu all falling down. I The only building, on the (arm I was the duelling house. Corn yields being obtained at this time ran around 15 bushels per acre. The people on this tour caw a very different picture from the one above. In less than three years, Mr. Smith has made wonderful improvements. He first spent about $400 In bulldozer work grading out for farm buildings, roads, etc. He now has a nice cattle and hay barn in which he houses his nine head herd of cows, heif ers, and calves, a laying house where he runs 350 laying hens, from which he is selling hatch ing eggs at a profitable price, modern hog houses and farrow ing houses to house his eleven broodsows and 89 head of shoats and pigs. 'There is 21 acres of Ladino clover and orchard grass now on the farm. This grass is being used for both pasture and hay. In addition to this it is holding and conserving the soil in this farm, no gullies or eroded spots can be found now. Mr. Smith has seven acres of corn, four acres of U. S. 282 hy brid, and two and one-half acres of W. Va. 1163 hybrid. In dications at this stage of ma turity are that Mr. Smith will get a yield of around 100 bush els per acre. He plans to cut his corn acreage to four acres next year, and put more land into grass and clover. The entire farm is now fenced with woven wire, and enough cross fences built of the same type wire to enable Mr. Smith to have 15 different fields for rotational grazing. Mr. Smith spent most of one winter clearing useless land of shrubs and trees for new pasture-, and cleaning ald ers along the branches to re claim good crop land. Mr. Smith is following a good farm man agement practice along the WATCH FOR NEXT WEEK S ANNOUNCEMENT of our GRAND OPENING Mason's Super-Market BIG BINGO PARTY Friday Night, August 24th AT V. F. W. He leaves a strip about 20 feet wide along each side of the branch which he has seeded to clover and grass. This enables him to cultivate his corn with his trac tor and not break any of it in turning. Also he mows this grass and clover three or four times a year and saves it for hay. At the same time he la able to mow his branch banks with his tractor and save much time and labor with a bush hook. Mr. Smith made the state ment that he has not made any cash money in the three years he has operated this farm. How ever, he feels that the Increase in value of his farm would compensate him for money in vested and he now has the farm in a high state of culti vation and buildings in good repair. He feels that his only problem now is maintenance of what he has. From here on he is confident of a good return on his investment. Mr. Smith is a unit demonstration farmer.
