this week acknowledged receipt
of the Macon County Baptist
ministers' protest, and both
wrote that they too were op
posed to President Truman's re
cent appointment of an am
bassador to the Vatican.
In essence, the minister's pro
test contends that the appoint
ment of an ambassador to the
Catholic state is the first step
toward the destruction of re
ligious freedom in the United
States. Copies were mailed to
the President and the two sen
ators.
Senator Hoey's reply said,
". . . I appreciate the opposi
tion of your association to this
appointment and wish to ad
vise that I am also against this
apf>ointment and shall do what
I can to defeat the confirma
tion of the appointee. . .
"... I am thoroughly opposed
to the violation of our constitu- j
tional principle of the separa- j
, tion of church and state", Sen
! ator Smith wrote. "I have great
respect for every man's church, 1
; but I wish to see every church '
treated as a church and not as
a state. Otherwise, we will have |
the same problems that the his- ,
