Since there has been some
confusion in Macon County con
cerning the use of TVA am
monium nitrate for use on hy
brid corn, I would like to ex
plain some of the reasons why
the Tennessee Valley Authority
Is making this material avail
able.
TVA has two primary objec

farmers in the watershed area

oil erosion at its source so
hat our good farming soils will
not fill up the lakes down
stream. Our demonstration
farms are set up so all the
farmers in the county can see
what good fertilization and
management will do in stopping
soil erosion. (2> They are in
terested in increasing farm in
comes. The two objectives are
closely related. In order to con
trol erosion we must build up
good pastures and other sod
crops. This in turn gives us bet
ter grazing and more hay;
therefore, we can keep more
livestock which is essential in
any balanced farm program.
Now where does planting hy
brid corn and using ammonium
, nitrate fit into the program.
We know that an adapted hy
brid earn properly fertilized will
produce a much higher yield of
corn than other varieties. In
this way you, the farmer, can
produce your corn needs on a
much smaller acreage and put
your remaining acres into grass
and increase your livestock car
rying capacity. Corn land should
be moved to bottom land and
use your sloping land for pas
ture and hay.
By applying 200-300 pounds
of nitrogen, which TVA is mak
ing available at a substantially
lower price than other sources,
you can expect to increase your
yield from 30 to 40 more bushels
per acre. In a year when feed
costs are expected to be exces
sively high, I don't believe you
can spend your money in any
other way to get as much re
turn for the amount you spend
on a production cost.
