Fred Sorrells, Pastor M acon Sports Rounds By J. F. BRADY You might know It. This col umn had to go out of town over the week-end and miss the Panthers' opening game with the lads from Andrews. But, from all we can gather, the local grid grinders got along pretty well without the side line yammering Of Makln' Macon's scribe and wrapped up the battle (?) with a 41 to 7 score. Do wish, however, that we could have been there to see It and add a few pictures to the files. Just for curosity and the rec ord. we took time out to ask around and see what the folks attending the game thought of this year's crew. And things are looking up. After the game was hashed and rehashed for our benefit, the following con clusions were reached: (1) the Panthers have one of the best lines folks have seen them sport in years. (2) the passing attack isn't too tepid (however, we under ?| stand that there was a mite of rain on game night and that . could have plenty to do with the success of the air route). Understand that during the pre-game warmup, one fan took time out to count passes, and he tells us that something like 13 tosses went through the air before an end snagged one. (3) the lads will be ready to warp Bryson City, but good. Bearing a host of unforeseen circumstances, Makln' Macon plans to get in on the cleat clobberin' this Friday night. We'll give our ideas, and they generally aren't worth too much, (but fill space) when this shindig Is over. Takin' bets that the lads will stretch on to their second win. ? ? * Our absence from Friday night's game here is explained in a trip down East to a news paper conference, and while we were there we nosed around a little to find out how Duke and Carolina are rounding out this year. Word has it that the Tar heel's have an average of 195 pounds in the line and 178 in the backfield. These figures round out to a 189-pound aver age for the whole team. Natur ally, they're going to have a good team this year. When we were down at UNC In the spring, Otto Graham was put ting a bug In their bonnet about the "T". Over Durham way, the Duke Blue Devils appear to be knee deep In power but their coach.
