West With Photo Unit Of Marines hi The Far Blast Marine Pfe. Fred M West, son ?f Dr. and Mrs. J. L. West, o f Franklin, is at a forward air but in Korea and has been as signed to a photo squadron of Marine Air Group 33, the corps fcas announced. The squadron is a unit of the first Marine Aircraft Wing. Pfc West, a graduate of Franklin High School, was maj oring in political science at the University of North Carolina when he entered the corps in February, 1952. Agricultural products repre sented 42 per cent of alj U. S. imports last year, compared with 48 per cent in 1951. The only newspaper in the world devoted exclusively to Macon County is The Franklin Press. Crabapple blossoms, jonquils, and narcis sus decorated the rooms. Mrs. W. H. Cobb won high score prize and Mrs. Elliot Cazlarc the bingo prize. Mid-afternoon retreshments were served. Miss Rebecca Nail was a guest of the club. MRS. HOWE ENTERTAINS HOUSE GUESTS AT TEA Mrs. James H. Howe enter tained with a tea Saturday afternoon at her home in Horse Cove honoring her over-night guests, Mrs. May T. New, dio cesan president of the Woman's Auxiliary of the Episcopal Church, and Miss Marion San borne, diocesan auxiliary secre tary. Mrs. New and Miss Sanborne, of Gastonia, were en route to Murphy to attend a meeting of the fifth district woman's aux iliary on Sunday, where an in teresting program on Bishop Harris' work in Liberia was giv en and a film entitled "Harvest in Liberia" was shown. PERSONALS Mr. and Mrs. Loring Raoul, of Sarasota. Fla., are spending several days at their summer home near Glen Falls. After a winter in Nev.' Orleans and a short visit with friends in Atlanta, Ga., on their way to Highlands, Mr. and Mrs. Westervelt Terhune are at "Western Fields", their summer home on the Dillard road. Mr. and Mrs. Dee Carpenter, of Highlands, announce the birth of a daughter, Joyce Evel yn, on April 16 at Highlands Community Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Rice, of Cashiers, announce the birth of a daughter, Donna Sue, on April 16 at Highlands Community Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lee But ler, of Cashiers, have announc ed the birth of twin daughters, Dora Kaye and Cora Faye on April 14 at Highlands Commun ity Hospital. James R. Phillips is taking his basic training with a para trooper division at Fort Camp bell, Ky. He is the son of Mrs. J. R. Phillips and the late Mr. Phillips. Mrs. Charles Wood and Miss Myrtle Talley have returned home after a visit with friends in Manassas, Va. Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Valentine, their daughter and son, Helen and Jimmie, who flew from Miami to Jamaica on December 10, have returned to Ft. Myers, Fla. Other places they visited in their almost month's trip were Haiti, Curaacao, Laguire, were Haiti, Curacao, Laguire, Tobago, Grenada, and St. Croix. Thair trip also included short plane stops on many other is lands. After a brief stay at her home here on East Main Street, Mrs. Valentine will rejoin her family in Fort Myers, Fla., where they will remain until the close of the school term. Arriving Friday for a week's visit with Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Earl Young, Jr., will be Mrs. Young's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Lissenden, and her brother, John Lissenden, of West Palm Beach, Fla. Colonel and Mrs. O. S. Brown ell have opened their summer home on Billy Cabin Mountain, after spending the winter in Charleston, S. C. John A. Russell, of Orlando, Fla., and a party of fishermen friends spent the week-end at the Russell summer home on Mirror Lake. L. J. Holt has returned from a visit with Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Michael in Wabasso, Fla. Mrs. W. T. Medlin, Jr., and her two children are here for a visit with her mother, Mrs. H. P. P. Thompson, and family. ! Slides Shown At Church ? Supper Meet In Highlands Kodachrome slides of scenes in the Great Smoky Mountains, shown by Earl Young, featured the program at last Thursday night's supper meeting of the Men of Highlands Presbyterian Church. The program was ar ranged by Steve Potts, program chairman of the evening. The 17 men present at the supper were Henry Cleaveland, president, W. H. Cobb, A. L. Chalker, C. E. Mitchell, Steve Potts, "W. W. Edwards, Charles J, Anderson, L. G. Misener, L. [ A. Edwards, Sidney McCarty, Jr., Dr. Sherman H- Pace, Har ry Holt, Earle Young, John H. C. Perry, Tom Harbison, F. N. Shearouse, and the Rev. Robert M. Hart, pastor. Mrs. W. H. Cobb and Mrs. Louis Edwards were chairmen of the supper committee. As sisting were Mrs. Sidney Mc carty, Jr., Mrs. John H. C. Per ry, Mrs. J. D. Harcombe, Mrs. Steve Potts, and Mrs. Lewis Rice, president of the Women of the Church. Prior to the California gold strike in 1849.
