Chief Barnard Back In .'States From Carrier Duty In Korea Chief Aviation Machinist i Mate S. R. Barnard, son of Mr. i and Mrs. W. M. Barnard, of : Franklin, Route 3, recently re- ] turned to the United States I after a tour of duty as chief i petty officer in charge of the i helicopter aboard the aircraft i carrier USS Kearsarge. it .has < been announced. i As crew chief, the announce ment explained, it was Chief ' Barnard's responsibility to keep . : the helicopter in tip-top flying ' < condition. The unit, a part of 1 Na,-y Helicopter Squadron One 1 (HU-1), the only navy hell copter squadron with units pre sently operating in Korea, per formed five rescues while in the Far East. Four of the res cues were pilots whose planes were ditched at sea, and one was a sailor who had fallen jverboard from a destroyer, the innouncement said. A veteran of 13 and a half rears in the navy, Chief Barn ird was. stationed in Australia iiiring World War II. He and lis wife and two children are iving at San Ysidro, Calif. WEST ONION SPIRIT UP Mailbox Posts Being Made; Gives Meal For Lions Club By J. L SANDERS (Community Reporter) Well sir, as this reporter ?lews the matter, things are pepping up, up and down the Georgia highway and its sub urbs. Things are really getting hot, as evidenced by a called meet ing at the Union School last Monday night. Not so much business transacted, but cer tainly a lot of discussion, which shows a community spirit and interest in home beautification and welfare which apparently no one realized existed. The special meeting was call ed to discuss the cost and plac ing of the new posts for mail boxes. The manufacturer of these posts and name plates is now working at Price's work shop on the Georgia highway at Longview. In order for names to appear' on the plates as you want them, each of you should stop by this shop and leave your correct name; or if this is not conven ient you can mail the informa tion on a post card to this re porter at Prentiss, Star Route, by Monday of next week. On Monday night of this week the joint staff of these three associations ? Longview, Prentiss, and West Union ? sponsored a supper for the franklin Lions Club, the pro ceeds going for improvements in the Union classrooms. At this meeting, Mrs. Roy Potts was elected secretary treasurer for the combined community projects and a com mittee was appointed to design the joint community signboards, which will be placed on the highway entering the sections of the development. This com mittee consists of the individual presidents and secretaries of the projects, and they are ask ed to meet at the Union School tonight (Thursday) at 8 o'clock to get things moving. The next meeting of the com munity organization is set for next Thursday night at the school. Beta Club Plans Supper Honoring Graduating Class Graduating members of the Franklin High School Beta Club will be honored by Junior mem bers of the club at a buffet supper May 2) at the home of Holland McSwain, Jr. Special guests will include Mr. and Mrs. Holland McSwain, Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Sutton, and Mr. and Mrs. C. Ray Lowe. The club, which has a mem bership of 20, is only a year old, but nevertheless has com pleted a number of projects, using the proceeds to purchase a nylon flag for the high school and to send delegates to the recent club convention In Ashe ville. Membership in the organiza tion is based on achievement, leadership, and character. Mrs. S. F. Beck and Mrs. J. Frank Martin are club sponsors. The supper is planned for 7:30 o'clock. Church Circles Hold Joint Meeting May 5 ? To Mark Anniversary A joint meeting of Circles 1 and 2 of the Franklin Presby terian Church was held May 4 i in observance of the 51st anni versary of the woman's auxili ary of the church. Following the devotion, by Mrs. Claude Bolton, Circle 2 gave an instructional program, "Furlough Homes". Mrs. Tom Nelson, program chairman, and Mrs. John Cogan discussed the need for such homes, which are to be built near seminaries for use by foreign missionaries on furlough in this country. The auxiliary birthday offer ing will be used this year for the homes. Mrs. Holland McSwain, chair man of Circle 2, presided. Mem bers of Circle 1 served as hos tesses. Methodist Revival Series Was Broadcast By Nolen The revival aeriM woducted last week at the muOMfct Meth odist Church by the Her. Owen T. Kelly, of Hopewell, Vs., was broadcast locally through an arrangement with John Robert (Bob) Nolen. Mr. Nolen recorded the serv ices each night and broadcast them the following morning at XI o'clock, transmitting over power lines, with an effective range of about one mile Mr. Nolen said this week he hopes to record and broadcast other services for the benefit of those who are unable to at tend church. Details of this plan are now being worked out. he added, and when completed will be announced, along with broadcast times and radio dial position. Mr. Kelly, pastor of the First Methodist Church in Hopewell, was one of several ministers from Virginia conducting re vival services at Methodist churches here under an ex change agreement with minis ters of the Waynesville district.
