County Agents
By S. W. MENDCNHALL
(County Agent)
A Florida cattle buyer has re
cently been in Macon County
buying springer heifers and
cows. This isn't anything new.
It has been happening for sev
eral years. However, this buyer,
as other buyers heretofore, was
particularly anxious to get arti
ficial heifers and was paying
more for them than heifers
sired the conventional way.
This is an opportunity that no
farmer in the county owning
one or more dairy cows can af
ford to miss. The market is
there for you if you will breed

artificially, (row oat bic heller*,
and breed them artificially so
they will freshen in the (all.
George Doster, a dairy farm
er In the Clarks Chapel com
munity, has just recently start
ed milking two artificial heif
ers that are milking around 40
pounds dally. George says that
a man with a milk cow, and
especially our Orade A dairy
men, can not afford to use any
thing but artificial breeding.
Last year Slier Slagle seeded
a field of Atlantic alfalfa. He
seeded only 20 pounds per acre
but secured an excellent stand.
Siler said that you could expect
at least 15 per cent more ton
nage per acre from this variety
over the common variety. Our
experiment stations have ob
tained about the same results.
This seed cost a little more, but
will be cheaper in the long run
After talking to several of our
farmers and also watching
many of our pastures, it has
been decided that our seeding
rate for orchard grass or fes
cue should be Increased from
12 to 15 pounds. One pound of
ladino clover is sufficient.
Farmers having one and a half
acres of ladino and grass pas
ture, or its equivalent per ani
mal unit, should report this to
the county agent's office so
pasture plaques may be award
ed. This Is a .mighty good proj
ect for the agricultural com
mittee in the organized com
munities and will add points in
the contest.
Ed Bradley, in the Iotla com
munity, filled his silo this spring
with a cereal mixture of wheat,
oats, and barley. During the dry
weather he was able to main
tain his milk flow. He likes this
plan mighty well.
Ned Teague, George Doster,
Mark Dowdle, and Ed Bradley
have Installed hay dryers this
year and are well pleased with
the results obtained. A better
quality hay can be cured with
