Highlands NEWS CLEMSON COLLEGE MEN TALK TO GARDEN CLUB The Highlands Garden Club met last Thursday at the Flat Mountain home of the presi dent, Mrs. A. T. Carter. As this was an open meeting on land scaping, members Invited friends to hear the guest speakers, David Watson and James Carey, both of Clemson College, S. C. Mr. Watson spoke of the in finite variety of landscaping to be found in mountain and hill side gardens, of the inspiring vistas that could be opened up here. He pointed but that all gardens should have a focal point. Mr. Watson paid tribute to the pioneering work of the late Prof. Thomas Grant HarbiJ son who, while working with the Arnold Arboretum of Har vard University, discovered a hitherto unknown small flower ed purple rhododendron. This rhododendron is now known as Rhododendron Harblsoni. He also spoke of the work be ing done by Henry Wright, who has an outatandlng collection of native plants and shrubs growing on his place. Mr. Carey gave detailed In structions on how to plant and how to maintain a border. Among the things he stressed was putting in the back row first, avoiding straight lines, and, above all else, allowing for normal growth. A little judicial pruning should be done each year rather than a ruthless cutting back at long intervals, which is apt to make plants look grotesque, he said. The pruning of holly at Christ mas time, he suggested, tenet bo* to keep K In ?h*pe and to pravtM Christmas decora tions. Mr. Cany showed many ryampias of cuttings rooted In ?harp sand, cuttings always be ing .MM fcpm the current ywtr** growth. The way to move various trees was explained. ityr.; Watson and Mr. Carey In vited all who would enjoy do lhg so to come to the Clemson college test gardens and aee the 150 TsrtotlM of easMUlu there. w. s^ya?".. ? many friend* for the klrvtnrea and sympathy shown us during the Illness and death of our daar mother, Mrs. Hannah W. 1Mb.
