C Panther# Split Cage Duel With Sylva; Beat Indians By TOMMY GNIISE ' Sports Editor Franklin High Franklin High's basketballers split their season opener with Sylva High on December 8 ? the boys losing and the girls winning ? but rolled to a twin win over Cherokee Friday night. The girls, defending champions of the Smoky Mountain Confer ence, were in top form as they swamped Sylva 59 to 2i). And they kept on the move in defeat ing Cherokee 53 to 29. After leading at the half, the Franklin lads dropped the opener with Sylva, 49 to 40. In the Chero kee clash they came out with a 36 to 29 victory. In the Sylva game, Jodie Lenior dumped in 10 points in the open ing stanza as the Panthers jump ed ahead 20 to 6 and were never challenged. Coach Howard Barn well cleared the bench, using 22 players. Lenior took the high scor ing honors with 17 points, follow ed by Audrey Gibson with 15. In the Cherokee game the girls found the going tough during the first three periods, but outscored the Indians by 19 points in the final stanza to capture a 53 to 29 victory. Again it was Lenior and Gibson in the scoring department with 25 and 20 points, respective ly Against Sylva, the Franklin boys put up a game fight, but after leading 22 to 20 at the half, fell to a third period Sylva rally and lost 49 to 40.
