Two Macon County Students
To Appear In Who's Who' <
Two Macon County girls will
have their biographies appear in !
the new addition of "Who's Who
in American Colleges and Univer
sities" as students at Western
Carolina College. Cullowhee.
They are Miss Barbara Gribble,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack
Gribble. and Miss Jane Crawford,
daughter of Mr. anc'. M:s. Laddie
Crawford.
Both of the young women are
seniors this year and are mtijcr
ine in elementary education.
They were selected for the hou
or for their interest and contri
butions to College activities.
Since the program of planting

November Road
Work Announced
During November, the State
Highway Commission complet
ed 1.8 miles of road work in
Macon County, according to a
report from Harry E. Buch
anan, 14th division commis
sioner.
Forces strengthened the ex
isting surfaces with traffic
bound macadam of the follow
ing 10-foot wide roads and
their lengths: Duvall Road, 0.3
mile; Watauga Road, 0.2; and
Potts Branch Road, 0.2.
Olive Hill Road, for 0.5 mile,
and Middle Skeenah Road, 0.6
mile, were two 12-foot wide
roads strengthened with traf
fic-bound macadam.

The Aluminum Company of
America Foundation college schol
arship award program for child
ren of employes of Nantahala
Power and Light Company will j
be continued in 1955, it was an- j
nounced this week by J.
Archer. Jr.. president of the com
pany, which has home offices in"
Franklin.
The program was established
last year by the foundation. The
first scholarships were awarded
in 1954 to 40 children of Alumin
um Company of America employes
representing 29 A. L. C. O. A. 1
plants and offices. Of the 40, |
$2,000 scholarships made avail- [
able each year, one is alloted to '
the winner among the children
of Alcoa employes of Nantahala
Power and Light Company and '
Carolina Aluminum Company at
Badin. N. C.

Arthur Lynn, son of a Carolina
Aluminum Company employee.

Pvt. Clyde F. Bates, of Frank
lin, Route 2. Is now serving in
Germany with the 1st Infantry
Division, the Army Home Town
News Center has announced.
The 21-year-old soldier, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Bates, is a
track vehicle repairman with the
division's 701st Ordnance Battilion
and has been in Europe since
November.
North Carolina's Green Swamp
and Dismal Swamp are the home
of bears weighing as much as 500
pounds, which may be legally
hunted during season.
