KEENER DIES MONDAY Macon Farmer Passes At Son's Home; Rites Conducted Wednesday Ervin Harvey Keener, 85-year old Macon native and farmer, died Monday at 6 p. m. at the home of his son, Richmond Keen er, in the Gneiss section, follow ing an illness of three months. The Rev. George Cloer and the Rev. J. I. Vinson conducted funer al services for Mr. Keener at the Goldmine Baptist Church yester day (Wednesday) at 11 a. m. Bur ial was in the church cemetery. Born October 21, 1869. Mr. Keener was the son of Isaac and Mrs. Polly Ann Keener. He was a member of the Goldmine church and was married to Miss Belle Gibson, of Gneiss, who died sever Gneiss; 29 grandchildren; and 33 In addition to his son, Rich mond Keener, he is survived by four other sons, Carl, Lawton, and Truman, all of Gneiss, and Henry, of Highlands; three daughters, Mrs. Frances McClure, of Waynes ville, Mrs. Effie Reed, of Newland. and Miss Genelia Keener, of Gneicc; 29 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. Henry B. Keener, Claude Keen er, Ray McCall, J. B. Keener, Arnold Keener, and Bert Dendy, all grandsons, were pallbearers. Potts Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Legion Auxiliary Meeting Features Americanism The American Legion Auxiliary met Tuesday night. February 15. at the home of Mrs. Pearl Hunt er, with Mrs. C. N. Dowdle, as co hostess. Thirteen members ana two visitors were present. Miss Frances Winstead, history teacher at Franklin High School, and Miss Nancy Angel, Franklin High senior, gave the program on "Americanism." A copy of all rights and duties of an American citizen was given each person present. A social hour followed the pro gram. Mrs. Wiggins Dies Thursday At Son's Home Mrs. Laura Wiggins, 82, a na tive of Swain County, died last Thursday at 11:30 a. m., at the home of her son. Bob Wiggins, in the Coweeta section. Funeral services for Mrs. Wig gins, who had been ill for a month, were conducted Saturday at 11 a. m. at the Coweeta Bap tist Church, of which she was a member. Officiating were the Rev. Claude Ledford, pastor, and the Rev. Lee Crawford. Burial was in the church cemetery. The daughter of Henry and Mrs. Rebecca Ray Queen, Mrs. Wig gins was born April 6. 1872. She was married to Sherrill Wiggins, of Swain County, who died several years ago. In addition to her son, Bob Wiggins, she is survived by three other sons, Charles and Grady, of Dillard. Ga., Route 1, and Harve, of Franklin, Route 2: three daugh ters. Mrs. Sallie Stiles, of Clover, S. C., Mrs. Fannie Freeman, of Bryson City, and Miss Cary Wig gins, of the home; a brother, Joe Queen, of Whittier; three sis ters, Mrs. Dochia Stiles, of Mari on, Mrs. Rebecca Frady, of Sylva, and Mrs. Mary Branton, of Sylva; 27 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. Macon Man Fined For Making False Unemployment Claim Dan H. Brabson. of Otto, was fined $25 and costs by Justice of the Peace Sam J. Murray on Tuesday for making a false state ment to obtain unemployment compensation for veterans, ac cording to an announcement by William Heyward. claims deputy for the Employment Security Commission of this district. Mr. Brabson entered a plea of guilty to the charge and was re leased after paying the fine and costs. Mr. Heyward said tha charge grew out of a section of the General Statutes stating that a person will not be eligible to draw any further benefits for one year from the date he filed his first claim for benefits. Mr. Heyward, who has charge of all prosecutions for violations of the criminal section of the law in this district, said the commis sion is making a "vigorous effort to prevent payment of fraudulent claims." He pointed out that a ? special unit, known as the Fraud Prevention and Detection Unit, has been set up in the Raleigh office for that purpose. All cases of fraud are prosecuted, he said. Korean Veterans Should Sign Up For Program Now Since April 1 is the deadline for veterans of the Korean War to , sign up for the farm training program, all planning to apply are urged to do so at once.
