Mr. Newton, plagued by a spring in his front yard, is ditching in an effort to locate I the head of the spring so he can dry his yard. He's had no luck yet. The town could use mora water and already has con tracted to drill the new well on NC 106 500 feet deeper. The present depth of 250 feet isn't sufficient to pay the town to pump the water into the sys tem. Highlands Ice Skating Featured In Newspaper The Atlanta (Ga.) Mrs. Potts Speaks On B!md Work Menjbers of the Highlands Lion's Club entertained their wives at the last regular meeting March 10 with a dinner at The Edwards Hotel. Mrs. Frank Potts, county super intendent of public welfare, was the guest speaker. She spoke on the work of the Lion's Clubs for the blind in Macon County and in North Carolina. Basketball Banquet Held For Teams A basketball banquet was held March 2 for the Highlands School teams. Quests included all the mem bers of the boys' and girls' teams, Principal and Mrs. F. N. Shear ouse, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Newton, Mr. and Mrs. John Gordon, Paul Walden, and Harry Holt. Hostesses were Mrs. Paul Nor ton, Mrs. Harry Holt, Mrs. Paul Walden, and Mrs. Cleveland Cabe. M. Y. F. HAS PARTY The M. Y. F. of the Highlands Methodist Church had a party Monday night in the recreation room of the church. About 20 were present and participated in a scavenger hunt. The Rev. R. T. Rotary Club Meets With Sylva Tuesday The Highlands Rotary Club met Tuesday with the Sylva Rotary Club in an lnter-city meeting, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Rotary International. The meeting was held at the new Hunter Library at Western Carolina College, Cullowhee. The Methodist Women of the Cullowhee church were hostesses. Program Scheduled To Raise Band Funds A mock wedding ? marrying William Hoyt Vinson to John Me Culloughington Miller ? cake walks, and other entertainment are planned March 25 at the Highlands School under the aus pices of the Lions Club and the P. T. A. Proceeds from the event, which is set for 7:30, will go to the Highlands band. FORESTER AT CATAWBA Forester John Connell, of High lands, is on temporary duty in the Catawba District. North Carolina has the lan =; fleet of school busses in the world r Scout Troop Stays Busy According to Bobby Norton, troop scribe, the Boy Scouts of Highlands, Troop 7 have been very busy recently. Their sponsor, the Rotary Club,, gave them a supper to register the troop and to reinstate officers last Tuesday night, March 8. The guests for this dinner were Tom Speed, field executive, and Mr. Hennessee, of Sylva. The new officers are Jimmy Lowe and Robert Edwards, both junior assistant scoutmasters; Billy Calloway and Bert Rogers, senior patrol leaders; the patrol leaders are Mike Baty, Plying Eagle Patrol, Billy Lowe, Panther Patrol, James Newton, Fox Pa trol, and John Hall, Flaming Ar row Patrol; John Rogers was elected quartermaster. Bobby Nor ton as scribe, and Woodrow Wil son as treasurer. , Last Thursday, the Scouts went to the court of honor in Webster. There were about eigh teen boys who were up for merit badges. Benson Picklesimer went up for Tenderfoot rank and James Newton went to the dis trict board of review for Star rank. For the past two weeks, the Scouts have been making baskets and bottoming chairs. Last Satur lay they spent the day in James Lowe's pasture cutting four white oaks to make splits for baskets rid chair bottoms. Bobby also said the Scouts are nry grateful to Mr. Harrison for he work that he has done for Ir'iem in the past year. GRILL TO MOVE Mr. and Mrs. K. F.
