C REGISTER OF DEEDS Does What Title Suggests A register of deeds does, for the most part, just what the title implies^-he registers deeds and papers as a county govern mental service to avoid possible property suits and disagree ments rising out of ownership. | His other jobs Include, among many other minor duties, issu- ! ing marriage licenses, recording election returns from the vari ous voting precincts, and index ing subdivisions and plats al lowed by law to be registered. He also serves as a secretary or clerk to the board of county commissioners and keeps min utes on the meetings of the board. Lake V. He is i married to the former Miss I Mildred Harrison, also a native of the county, and they have two children, Linda, 11, and Bennie, 7. Here are a feW of the duties of the register of deeds, as set up in the General Statutes of North Carolina: Registration of Instruments: The register of deeds shall reg ister all instruments in writing delivered to him for registra- 1 tion forthwith. He shall indorse on each instrument in writing the day and hour on which It Is presented to him for regis tration, and such Indorsement shall be entered on his books and form a part of the regis tration, and he shall, immedi ately upon making the Indorse ment herein .required upon each instrument in writing, In dex and cross Index the same in the order of time in which such instruments are presented to him: . . . Certify and Register Copies: When a deed, mortgage, or oth er conveyance conveying real estate situated in two or more counties is presented for regis tration duly probated and a copy thereof is presented with the same, the register shall compare the copy with the original, and if it be a true copy thereof he shall certify the same, and thereupon the register shall Indorse the orig inal deed or conveyance as duly registered in his county, desig nating the book in which the same is registered, and deliver 1 the original deed to the party entitled thereto and register I the same from the certified | copy thereof to be retained by him for that purpose . . . General Index Kept: The board of county commissioners, at the expense of the county, shall cause to be made and consolidated into one book a general index of all the deeds and other documents in the register's office, and the regis ter shall afterwards keep up such index without any addi tional compensation. The board of county commissioners shall also have the authority to in stall the modern "Family" in dex system and wherever the "Family" index system is in use, no instruments shall be lawfully recorded until indexed and cross indexed under the appropriate family name and the appropriate alphabetical subdivision of said family name, according to the particular sys tem in use. Index and Cross Index of Reg istered Instruments: The regis ter of deeds shall provide and keep in his office full and com plete alphabetical indexes of the names of the parties to all liens, grants, deeds, mortgages, bonds, and other instruments of writing required or author ized to be registered . . . Clerk to Board of Commis sioners: The register of deeds is exofflcio clerk of the board of county commissioners, and as such, shall perform the duties imposed by law or by order of the said board. Baptist Rally Slated Monday As a preliminary to an evange listic crusade in April, a "Macon Baptist Men's Crusade Rally" is planned Monday evening at 7:30 at the First church in Franklin.
