Holly Springs Votes To Form Boy Scout Troop By MISS MILDRED CORBIN (Community Reporter) Holly Springs Rural Community Development Organization has de cided to sponsor a community Boy Scout troop. At a meeting Monday night at the community building, the group heard H. H. Gnuse, Jr.. of Franklin, commissioner of the Smoky Mountain Boy Scout Dis trict, talk on Boy Scouts. A vote to sponsor a troop followed his talk. The following were appointed as a troop committee: Walter Tay lor, S. W. Winkleblack, Owen Am nions, Jack Cabe, Charles Fer guson, Woodrow Franklin, and Bob Taylor. This group plans to meet this week to discuss organization of the troop. Woodrow Franklin is painting the individual names for the signs to be placed at the intersections leading from the gravel roads on to the paved roads of the com munity. The basketball court is completed, all but sanding. Mrs. Rita Ferguson reported a total of $34 collected for the American Red Cross drive. A collection was taken for the Heart Fund and $4 was realized. For the meeting, the program chairman, Mrs. Jack Cabe, ar ranged a carding and spinning demonstration. Mrs. Katherine Crawford's old spinning wheel was used. The wheel is more than 100 years old and was handed down to her mother years ago. Those taking part in the demon stration were Mrs. Jane Crawford, Mrs. Ida Elliott, and Mrs. L. A. Berry. The meeting opened with a prayer by Mrs. Kacnenne Craw ford. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Rita Ferguson, Mrs. Dorothy Seagle, and Mrs. Virginia Pattillo. Miss Cartledge Given Superior Voice Rate At District Event Miss Grace Cartledge, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Cartledge, of Weaverville, formerly of Frank lin, was given a superior rating as a vocalist in the district music festival held at Mars Hill College, Mars Hill, on Saturday. She was also selected as a candidate for a scholarship for the Duke-House Scholarship in voice. She will com pete in the state contest. Miss Cartledge is the grand daughter of Mrs. J. L. Barnard, of Franklin. Senior 4-H Girla Plan Bake Sale In Town On Friday The Senior 4-H Club girls of the Cartoogechaye community will hold a bake sale of coffee cake, hot buns, and other breads, at the Nantahala Power and Light Company building on Good Fri day, April 8, beginning at 8 a. m., it has been announced. Boys Build Houses While Girls Sew The boys built bird houses and the girls hemmed dish towels and made candy at the April 2 meet ing of the Cullasaja 4-H Club, according to the club reporters, Ruth McCall and Marion Bryson m. The meeting was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Bryson. Following the work per iod, Sharon Swanson presided over the business session.
