Blalock, dairy extension specialist. A cow's normal lacta tion length is 10 months, with a six to eight week "rest period" before the next lactation. If you reduce the dry period, she will probably give much less milk dur ing the next lactation. Cows need the rest to repair any damage done to the complicated parts of her milk producing system. One study showed that cows given the six to eight weeks dry period produced 1.000 pounds more milk than cows that were dry less than 30 days. Q. I can't dry my cow up; what can I do about it? A. You're lucky to have such ;ood milkers, say Blalock. but they should get a normal dry period. On heavy milkers, reduce reed and water until production drops to about 20 pounds a day ind then just quit milking. They'll Iry up. If a cow has had mastitis, watch her closely; if inflamma tion shows, milk her out again. Q Can I get a loan to build jrain storage. A. Yes, you can borrow up to 80 per cent of the cost, before erection, through your ASC office.
