Mrs. Tallent, 36, Passes In Franklin Mrs. Pearl Isa belle Womack Tallent, 36. wife of Robert L. Tal lent, of Franklin, died of a heart attack Tuesday at 3:45 p. in. at her home. She had been suffer ing from a heart condition for several years. The Rev. M. W. Chapman will conduct funeral services for Mrs. Tallent today (Thursday at 11 a. m. at the Fust Baptist Church. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cem etery. Daughter of Roy T. Womack [ and the late Mrs. Nannie John son Womack, Mrs. Tallent was bom April 25, 1919. She was a member of the First Baptist j Church and was married to Mr. Tallent August 22. 1936, in Clay ton, O*. She was educated in the Fianklin schools. Surviving, in addition to her husband and father, are two sons, Ranee and Wayne, two daughters, Robbie Gay and Branda, and a sister, Mrs. Helen Love, of Char lotte. Pallbearers will be Herman Mason. Milton Fouts. Dover Worn ?acl:. D. L. Clark. Delmis Clampitt, and Sam Tallent. Bryant Funeral Home is in charge. Minor Accident Mars Holiday Safety Stand Cm t minor traffic accident marred Macon County's high way safety standing over the Christmas week-end. In a high-speed chase with a police car about 2 a. m. Christmas day, John Paul Jones, 23, of Franklin Route 4, lost control of his 1950 Ford In a curve on NC 28 near the Inter section of Riverview Road and mt a bank, causing damages estimated at $75, according to ;an accident report filed by Highway Patrolman H. T. Fer guson. Policeman Nelson Ledford, in the town prowl car, began chas ing the Jones' car inside the town limits. The officer said tils siren went unheeded and ithat he clocked Jones at 80 an.p.h. before the mishap. Jones Is reported to have left the' scene of the accident. He was served with warrants charging him with reckless ?driving and speeding the follow ing morning by Patrolman Fer -puson Fire Destroys Home Of Montagues Friday Fire of undetermined origin Friday night destroyed the five room dwelling of Mr. and Mrs. Kay Montague just off the Franklin - Dillsboro highway about two miles from the town limits. The Montagues were on a hol iday trip to Rocky Mount. Mr. Montague estimated their loss, including home and be longings, at $7,500. They lost everything but the clothes they had on the trip. Mrs. Montague said they carried "a little" in surance. It was the second time the Montagues have suffered a loss to fire. About a year and a half ago, fire did considerable damage to their living quarters in the rear of their old restau rant, "Dixie Grill", in the build ing now occupied by City Press ing Club. Small Crowd Attends Christmas Program A small crowd attended the Jaycee - sponsored Christmas program Friday evening at the Franklin Presbyterian Church. Admission was a gift for the needy. Items collected were dis tributed by Jaycees at Christ mas. Directed by the Rev. J. Bryan Hatchett, the choir was com posed of voices from the choirs of Franklin churches. Soloists were Mrs. Howard Barnwell, T. A. Orr, and Henry Wilkle. Or ganist was Mrs. Margaret Coop er. Dance Slated Tonight For College Students A dance for teen-agers and college students home for the holidays will be held tonight (Thursday) in the East Frank lin School auditorium. Set to begin at 8 o'clock, dance music will be by the Starlighters. The youth center association is sponsoring the dance. MRS. CANDLER DIES Mrs. J. B. Candler, 60, died unexpectedly in a Lumberton hospital at 2 a. m. yesterday (Wednesday). The former Miss Bertha Jeanette Thomas, she is the daughter of Mrs. John Thomas and the sister of Sher iff J. Harry Thomas and Jess B. Thomas. No. 2 Christmas Eve took the balmy elements In shirt sleeves and light clothes. But the unseasonable shift in temperature had its toll in new head colds and runny noses. Spread Cheer A number of clubs, churches, and organizations spread Christmas cheer among those less fortunate with baskets brimming with gifts of food, clothing, and toys. The names of more than 75 families were furnished these groups by the county welfare department, according to Mrs. Eloise G. Potts, superintendent. Top Attractions Top attractions during the week were three Christmas lighting contests over the coun ty. Hundreds of automobiles ? most loaded front and back with friends and relatives ? piled back and forth along the county highways and byways to give their occupants front row seats for contesting Franklin and Highlands and one for 12 organized communities over the county.
