What's New At Franklin High By NORMAN B. SMITH Members of the senior class have slated two more perform ances of their class play, "If Mother Only Knew," a three act comedy. The public is invited to see the play Saturday night at 8 at the East Franklin School Auditorium. Admission will be 70c for adults and 30c for students. Another per formance for high school students only, will be given December 14 at the East Franklin School Audi torium to a full house. The cast has been practicing since late October. Proceeds will go to the senior class. ? * * Semi-final exams will be given today and tomorrow at Frank lin High. Classes have been re viewing for the exams all this week. Semi-final grades are especially important because the valedictor ian and salutatorian of the grad uating class, as well as honor stu dents in the senior, junior, and sophomore classes, are chosen on the basis of grades up to the mid year. Only semi-final and final grades are recorded on permanent records. * f , * Action on a United Fund drive and a school Valentine party was taken in the Student Council meeting last Friday. Six charitable organizations will | share in this year's United Fund drive, which will be held January 30-February 3. Between $400 and $500 is expected to be donated at Franklin School. The March of Dimes will re ceive 37y2% of the proceeds and American Heart Fund, Junior Red Cross, Easter Seals, American Can cer Society, and Christmas Seals will each receive No organizations are permitted to carry on their own fund cam paigns at Franklin High and Franklin Elementary School. Last year a total of $400.84 was taken in. Three Franklin High seniors will take the National College Board examination at David Miller High School in Asheville Saturday morning. ( The results of this examination is required by several colleges in granting scholarships. Nancy Cable, Tommy Gnuse, and Norman Smith will take the tests.' Nancy is applying for the George Hankings Scholorship to Wake Forrest College: Tommy is sending his results to the Angier B. Duke Scholorship, of Duke Uni versity, and to the Alcoa Scholor ship; and Norman is applying for a General Motors National Schol orship, the Angier B. Duke Schol orship. and the John Motley More head Scholorship at the Univer sity of North Carolina. ? * * The library recently added 100 new volumes to its shelves. The books were purchased from a state fund which alotted $243 to Frank lin High Each department in the high school selected some of the new books. Another book pur chase will be made soon. . . . Two educational movies were shown here last week. Business classes taught by Ed Williams. Mrs. Harry Corbin, and Mrs. E. G. Crawford saw "The Right , Touch," a film about typing. Jack Angel's science classes were shown "Paper Work," a film on the pro duction of paper and paper pro ducts. I ? ? ? The U. S. Internal Revenue Ser vice School Program sent a num ber of handbooks and sample in come tax forms to be used in ex plaining the income tax system to students. Mrs. E. G. Beta Club January 23 in t a candlelight ceremony. Parents will be invited.
