Dr. T. W. Johnson, who recent ly conducted a survey in middle North Carolina, in cooperation with the Southeastern Experiment Station at Asheviiie. explains that I the fungus grows throughout the wood and in dense, gray-black "cushions" underneath the bark, cracking it and producing spores which can infest other trees. The spread of oak wilt is not completely understood. Insects are the irost probable overland car riers, while natural root-grafts are responsible for underground I spread. Experiments have shown I that high temperatures retard | the disease. j Dr. Johnson points out that oak wilt, which has caused its worst damage in Wisconsin and Iowa, has not been found in the Pied mont or Coastal Plain of any of the Eastern states. In North Carolina, the State j Forest Service, through the State Department of Conservation ind Development, ig systematically at tempting to eliminate the hazard of spread by cutting and spraying the trunks of infested trees as they are found. Dr. Johnson em phasizes that control of oak wilt "can only be accomplished by the cooperative efforts of federal, state and local agencies and private landowners." Dr. George H. Hepting, of the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station, said recently that al though "oak wilt has caused dam age in certain localities besides Wisconsin and Iowa, it "has been the cause of concern more because of the threat of the extent to which it might build up in the future than because of the rela tively small economic loss to for ests that it has caused to date." A smiling clerk showed her into a private office. She explained solemnly that her girls' club was raising money and would he please contribute? The banker laid a dollar bill and a dime on the desk and said: "You take whichever one you want." She picked up the dime and said. "My mother always taught me to take the smallest piece " but picking up the dollar bill also, she added, but so I won't lose this dime, I'll take this piece of paper to wrap it up in."
