What's The Commotion? Just Ice Skating In Highlands i By MRS. WAYNE CROWE HIGHLANDS. ? If you passed | through Highlands on the week- j | end, you probably wondered what j i was causing all the commotion 1 ! along" the banks of Sequoyah and Mirror Lakes. It's easy to explain: ithere were all kinds of skaters ? ! amateur's and professionals anu , those who required one person to , hold them up and those who re quired two. i There were also those who needed skates on other parts of their anatomy). In addition, there were at least | two or three spectators for each skater. | Skating has been going on fo: j i more than two months here and | has become the major attraction j and leisure time activity for young j and old. On week-ends numbers I of people may be seen cooking I picnic lunches along the highways and all the eating places open in town stay full. Lights are strung down Mirror Lake and floodlights are up in several places. This makes night skating popular and practical for people who have to work in the day. To make the ice smoother for the Week-end. the Highlands Fire Department sprayed it Friday. The ice is from nine to 10 inches ; thick on Mirror Lake. Among out-of-county visitors ; here for the week-end skating , were Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Sheriff | and family, of Westminster, S, C . Richard Hammond, of Anderson. :S. C.. Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Coop.i ar rived last week, after sp- ndir," Thumm Discusses Church Work At Methodist Meet Approximately 35 men from Methodist churches throughout the county Tuesday night heard the Rev. M. V. Thumm discuss his work as director of the Wes ley Foundation at Western Caro lina College. ' The occasion was the January meeting of the Macon County Methodist Men's Club, held at Bethel church. The Wesley Foundation is the college level counterpart of the Methodist Youth Fellowship, the guest speaker explained. It seeks to provide "a home away from home, under Christian influence, within the framework of the church", he said. Mr. Thumm is pastor of the Cullowhee Methodist Church, head of the Wesley Foundation, and a part-time instructor in re ligion on the faculty of the col lege. Since there are only two churches at Cullowhee ? the Bap tist and Methodist ? much of his work is with non-Methodist stu dents, he said. Forty -one Metho dists, however, have voluntarily become affiliate members of his church, he said. With the church used for a va riety of student activities, it is be coming too small ? "the congre gation is being crowded out of its own church" by student work: . and the speaker said a movement i is on foot to enlarge tile structure. At a business session, a report was heard on the prison camp project, and the present commit tee was instructed to bring to the next meeting a concrete proposal tor starting activities at the camp, after a conference with thu prison superintendent E. G. Craw ford and Lake V. Shope were ap pointed a committee on arrange ments fbr future meetings, and the group voted to renew its lease on the youth camp at Wilson Lick. -,v\ R. S.
