Sgt. Prince Spending Leave In Highlands Sgt. Charles R. Prince is spend ing a 30-day leave with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Prince, of Highlands. Sgt. Prince has Just returned from Korea, where he spent 15 months with the U. S. Army. At the end of his leave, he expects to report to Fort Bragg for further assignment In the airborne. Campbell, 69, of West Asheville. a native of Franklin, died March 28 at an Asheville hos pital. He was the son of the late John and Ellen Byrd Campbell, of Franklin. Surviving are his wife, Emma Hatcher Campbell, formerly of Jackson County; two sons. Frank, of Asheville, and Harry, of Char lotte; three daughters. Mrs. Paul ine Orr, of Charlotte. Mrs. Leslie Byrd, of Asheville. and Miss Hilda Campbell, of St. Louis. Mo.; and two sisters, Mrs. Carlton Shirley, of Lavonia. Ga? and Mrs. Nellie Justice of Amity, Oa. Funeral services were held Fri day in Asheville and burial was in Green Hills cemetery. Cpl. Keener On Duty With Marines In Fla.; Ha* Sailor Brother Cpl. Charles R. Keener, veteran of duty with the U. 8. Air Force and U. S. Marines, is now with the latter outfit in Miami. Fla. Son of Mrs. O. D. Hedden, of Franklin, he recently completed aviation electronics technician school at Memphis, Tenn., ending fifth in his class. He was one of two Marines at Camp Lejeune eligible for the school. In 1945, at the age of 17-, he enlisted in the air force and spent 14 months in Japan. At the end of his hitch, he reenlisted and was sent to radio school at Scott Field, HI., and then to Germany for two years. After a short time out of service, he enlisted in the Marines in July, 1953. A younger brother, Roy Keener, has been In the U. S. Navy three years and is serving aboard the USS Tutuila, a repair ship oper ating out of Norfolk, Va. He has visited here the last two week ends while his ship is in port. Only one man tried, convicted, and sentenced in the courts of Macon County has ever been exe cuted. He was Curtis Shedd, who died in the gas chamber at Ral eigh in 1951, for the strangulation slayings of two South Carolina girls. Baltimore Hi|cers Leave Deep (*ap For Hike On. Trail Seven hikers from Baltimore, Md? started a hike along the Ap palachian Trail on Saturday. Their destination was Mt. Ogle thorpe. Ga.t the southern end of the trail. The hikers were given a send-off at Deep Gap by James Cragon. of Atlanta. Ga., vice-presi dent of the Appalachian Trail board and the Rev. A. Rufus Mor gan, of Franklin, board member. During its more than 30 years, the Macon County Building and Loan Association has had to fore close on less than half a dozen properties ? all other loans were paid by the borrowers. Serious Forest Fire Averted By Local Men Quick action on the part of a trio of men Saturday averted what might have been a serious forest fire on Buck Knob, near Wallace Gap, in the Upper Cartoogechaye section. Slier Slagie, wno first spotted the blaze. Bob Southards, and Howard Hastings brought it under control even before the arrival of District Ranger W. L. Nothsteln and County Ranger J. Fred Bryson and their crews. About an acre burned. Ranger Nothstein said the day was a "bad fire day" (dry and windy) and that the quick work of the three prevented a serious fire.
