Grants-In-Aid Awarded To Biological Station Dr. Thelma Howell, executive director of the Highlands Biologi cal Station, has announced the awarding of eight grants-in-aid for basic research at the station, which will begin its 29th session June 1. They are made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation and the research will cover a wide variety of fields, she said. Dr. T. H. Eaton, Jr., of East Carolina College, and ?)r. Albert E. Reynolds, of De Pauw Univer sity, both will study salamanders, while Dr. Henry M. Stevenson, Jr., of Florida State University, PLUMBING Prompt Service Andrew Gregory FRANKLIN, N. C. A study of the flora of south western North Carolina, as a part of a larger problem dealing with the flora of the Carolinas, will be undertaken by Dr. Albert E. Radford, of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Two graduate students from U. N. C. will also study plants. Dr. George F. Ramseur will take up the vascular flora of the high mountain communities and Duanc F. Houck will work on Pynanthe num. A. F. Mark, of Duke University, will investigate the grassy balds of the Southern Appalachians with particular reference to forest in vasion as related to differences in biotic, edaphic, and microclimatic factors. Allen Rebuck, of Wesleyan Col lege, Macon, Ga., will investigate the relationship of soils and the oak communities in southwestern North Carolina. Having recently undergone extensive repairs, they are to be used as dormitories for the biologi cal station investigators, she said. Nature Classes Set The executive director said the Museum of Natural History also has undergone repairs. The nature study classes for children, held each year in the museum, will start June 19, with Miss Celia Tomberlin, of Lowell, serving as nature study counselor. Trustees To Meet The board of trustees of the station will hold its annual meet ing June 25 in the museum build ing. It will be followed by the annual meeting of the members. Officers of the administration, in addition to Dr. Howell and Miss Tomberlin, are James J. Priauf, Vanderbilt University, president; Lewis Berner, Univer sity of Florida, vice-president; and Gertrude Harbison, of Highlands, treasurer. Associates include H. M. Wright, of Highlands, botany; Toliver Crunkleton, of Highlands, ornith ology; Lewis Dendy, of Highlands, mineralogy; Sara Weems, Valdosta State College, manager of Illgnes cottages; and Toliver Crunkleton, caretaker. Brookshire Returns To States Fireman Harold W. Brookshire, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Brook shire, of Franklin, Route 1, was scheduled to return to San Fran cisco, Calif., May 26 aboard the Pacific Fleet general stores issue ship, USS League Island, the Fleet Home Town News Center announ ced this week. His wife is the former Miss Jane Ledbetter, also of Franklin, Route 1. Locals Returning From Craft Camp Near Waynesville Several from here are return ing today (Thursday) from Camp Schaub near Waynesville where they have been attending a craft camp for three days. They include Mrs. Florence S. Sherrill, county home agent, Mrs. Eugene Couch, county craft lead er from the Union Home Demon stration Club, Mrs. Carl Slagle, who was on the craft camp fac ulty, Miss Annie Ledford, of the Olive Hill-Oak Dale club, and Mrs. Carolyn Carter, of pine Hill Trail er Park, who teaches crafts in the county.
