"Is Iowa going to keep selling eggs in North Carolina, or are we going to learn to sell eggs now?" This is the question Clayton P. Libeau, poultry and egg market ing specialist at North Carolina State College, places before North Carolina egg producers. Citing a recent release on poul try operations in Iowa, Mr. Libeau points out that Iowa ships out of the state each year more than three times as many eggs as North Carolina produces. Some of these eggs shipped from Iowa find a way into North Carolina cities where eggs are used in volume, he says. According to production reports received by Mr. Libeau, the hens in Iowa average about one to two dozen more eggs per hen than hens in our own state. He points out that this, along with the feeding system used in Iowa, makes very tough competition for North Carolina producers. Mr. Libeau believes that one way North Carolina farmers can move ahead of this competition is to pass them in the size of operation. He thinks that farmers need to start thinking about 1,000 hens as a small family operation and growing into a commercial flock of 8,000 to 10,000 hens. This would permit the family to earn a rather high standard of living and pass outside competition that so far has been able to sell eggs cheaper in our own state than we can ourselves. All the research to date, adds Mr. Libeau, indicates that large flocks have higher quality eggs than small flocks do. Therefore, he believes the market will in crease for North Carolina pro duced eggs as the size of the flocks increases, providing local producers can keep costs down below competitive selling prices in other states. Reported milk production on North Carolina farms during May amounted to 162 million pounds, the highest monthly output since July of 1953. 1 lTegal advertising EXECUTRIX NOTICE Having qualified as Ancillary Executrix in Macon County, North Carolina, of the estate of Eva G.
