VIRGIE AND TOM GRANT, Proprietors Located on the Cowee Mountain on US 441 I ard And Seen ON MACON BYWAYS By ROLFE NEILL ONE THING that has Impressed me since coming here is the courtesy of the people. In particu lar, I've noticed at the post office that almost no matter who goes in before you, he always holds the door open for you. ? I AM not the only person who has a feeling for Macon County. & letter I saw pays such a com pliment to the citizens here that I believe the folks who make this land what it is would enjoy read ing part of it. Hear this from another newcomer: "One of the things that brought us to Franklin is the belief that the small town, more particularly the mountain small town, is a repository of those values and traits in people which we esteem. We have not been disappointed. "Somehow, when the vine of free, independent men withered elsewhere ? as a result of urbani zation and untutored leisure and wealth ? a seed pod or two blew Into the North Carolina moun tains. Here flourish people with all the goodness that you read of in the frontiersman ? proud but quick to help: reserved but candid; honest; ingenious . . . their hands have learned to make what their pockets could not af ford; community-minded ... in this county of Macon there is tremendous community competi tion, right on down to who's got the best Christmas tree lighting. "This is banquet country, the kind of country you feast on with a look. It's mood country, too, with shadows and shapes and growth and colors which get into your soul's marrow . . . good for sad, mellow thoughts on the worth lessness of most of us who popu late this wonderful world, but good, too, for an elixir ... for putting spirit Into the system. "You don't, have to live here but a week to know that the people take their character from the land." ? IF SANTA CLAUS is late next week I want the children to know why: The town clock Is broken and their daddies won't get It fixed. PEOPLE TALK a lot about the weather but don't do anything about It, Mark Twain observed. It's the same way with TV. Par ents gripe about how their school age children Ignore their lessons to watch television. So, It Is with pleasure we pre sent the 1956 Woman of Action medal to Mrs. L. W. Deltz, on Cowee. When her two school-age children didn't follow her orders to study and then watch TV, she took action. She had the set re moved. That took more than action, that took courage. ? THE PHILLIPS 66 people have been so busy with their paint brushes around here maybe they haven't had time to look In their Blue Back Speller. If they do, they'll find there's no such word as "artic", which appears in the trade name for one of their brands of oil. HOW MUCH does it cost to raise a grandchild? The Judge and the Lawyer disagreed. John Queen, former solicitor for this district and now pract icing at Waynesville, represented a local man in a non-support case. The defendant has a wife and two children here and he works as a timekeeper for a firm in Roanoke, Va. "My client says $20 a month for the two and I Say $40," said the lawyer. "We'll have to get a figure in between, Your Honor." "Wait a minute," said Judge Nettles, "how many grandchildren have you got, Mr. Queen?" "Six." "And you can raise a grand child on $20 a month?" "Shah. I can raise one on half that. It depends on what kind of living they're used to. Why, one will spend as much as six if you will let him." Lawyer Queen's estimates not withstanding, the Judge thought $50 a month would be low enough. The defendant was orderd to pay that sum until the youngest (the children are five and six) reaches 18 years of age. ? THAT'S A pretty "Merry Christ mas" sign up at a school on the Murphy Road. But how do you know who the greeting is from? There's not a sign any where around to let folks know that the handsome building is the Cartooge chaye school. There is a lot of talk about maybe having a woman as presi dent, but there is no danger ? a president has to be least 35 years old. Elkln Tribune.
