JAYCEES SEEK AUTO TRAINING FOR STUDENTS Ask Local Organizations To Support Plan To Provide The Money Numerous studies, comparing trained drivers with untrained drivers, show high school students who have driver education have less than half the number of acci dents and traffic law violation convictions experienced by stu dents who did not take the course. Impressed by this, the North Carolina Junior Chamber of Com merce is seeking legislation in the coming General Assembly to pro vide $1,500,000 to hire enough driving teachers for a state-wide program of automobile operation instruction, buy the training cars, and pay for their operation. This week, R. W. (Bob) Moore, chairman of the local Jaycees' j driver training education commit- j tee. began contacting all local clubs and organized communities and is asking them to go on rec ord favoring the legislation. According to Jaycee publicity on the driver training program. 52 per cent of the nation's high schools offered a /course In driver education In the 1955-56 school year. In North Carolina, only 24 per cent of the high schools had such a course. Traffic accidents are the chief cause of death for all persons of school age in North Carolina, and there are 60,000 children a year i who reach the legal driving age. 1 The publicity release proposes that funds for the hiring of driv ing teachers come from a $1 tax on all motor vehicles paying a li cense fee of $10 or more. Another source, the Jaycees say, would be 'to divert some of the money now collected through gasoline inspec I tion fees. Franklin High School has a I driver training program. How ever, the teacher is not hired spe cifically for the job. Clayton Ram sey, the instructor, is taken off his regular teaching duties for the driving program. The training car is furnished Cartoogechaye Secret Pal Group Has Party Several women of the Cartooge chaye community held their "secret pal revelation" party last Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Harold Enloe. Hostesses were Mrs. Enloe, Mrs. Earl Harrison, and Mrs. Cecil Parker. Each one present received a gift from her secret pal of the year. Quiz games were played and names were drawn for pals for the coming year. The hostesses served refresh ments. through the courtesy of a local automobile dealer and the stu dents buy the gas. Insurance on the car Is provided by thfe Frank lin Jaycees. f The course is an /elective one and is broken into two parts, book study, followed by actual driving training.
