2 Local Boy Scouts Get
High Ranks At Ceremony
Life badges ? one step below the
coveted Eagle rank ? were awarded
to two Boy Scouts of Franklin,
Troop 21. at a largely attended
court of honor last Thursday night
at the Franklin Presbyterian
Church.
The high ranks went to Doug
las Vinson and Tommy McCollum,
with H. H. Gnuse, Jr.. handling
the presentations.
During the ceremony, which
drew some 18S. lesser ranks and
merit badges went to Boy Scouts
from Highlands. Sylva, East La
porte, Cullowhee, and other local
troops.
Thirty-one newcomers to Boy
Scouting received Tenderfoot
badges from Tom Speed, of Ashe
ville, field executive. Of this
number. 27 were from Macon
troops. They were Roy Franklin
Lowe, of Highlands, Troop 7, and
Sonny Burrell, Bill Reid, Michael
E. Coates, Joe Martin, Herbert

Meeting for the first time this
year, the Hlgdonville Rural Com
munity Development Organization
last week made plans to hold an
amateur show and cake walk at
Cullasaja School on Jan. 26.
Proceeds of the show will go
to the polio drive. Sidney Clay
was named chairman of the pro
gram.
A number of club projects were
discussed and plans were made
to speed their completion.
Home improvements reported in
cluded new TV sets at Mrs. T.lllle
Crawford's and Mrs. Bertie Sut
tle's, a new bedroom at Mr. and
Mrs. Dale Carter's, and a new
bedroom and enlarged living room
at Mr. and Mrs. Blair Price's.
