Franklin's girls continued undefeated while the boys won two of their three contests. Last Wednesday night (Jan. 16), Qlenvllle was knocked out of the undefeated ratings as Franklin's lassies poured It on here, 77 to 44. Lucy Henry nearly whipped the visitors slnglehanded. getting 42 points. The girls led at the half, 32-20. The boys edged Qlenvllle, 44 to 43, with Mltchel Houston and Wll ard Smith each getting 16 points. Qlenvllle was ahead at the half. 23 to 17. The games with Qlenvllle were postponed from Tuesday to Wednesday because of Icy roads. Sylva lost a doubleheader here Friday. The girls, led by Mavis Gibson's 24 points, drubbed Sylva. The boys won their game, 76-26. Smith was high man that night, too, with 18. On Tuesday, Franklin split at Cherokee. The girls won, SO to 18, behind Miss Gibson's 19 tallies. The boys lost, 54 to 42. although Houston hit for 21 markers, Chero kee led at the half, 24 to 22. Franklin plays Bryson City to morrow (Friday) there and Tues day Cullowhee comes here. It is generally recognized that heavy timbers ex posed to flames will maintain their strength long after steel beams designed for similar strength col lapse. FLAVOR LASTS Lindane, an Important new in secticide, may affect the flavor and odor of crop?, even a number of years after its application, say U. S. Department of Agriculture researchers. Potatoes grow where lindane-treated cucumbers had pre viously been grown showed off flavor effects, as did other food crops in varying degrees. Lindane has been widely used throughout the Southeast on cucumber plant ings without complaints' off off flavor on the cucumber crop, but the researchers say that new find ings emphasize that lindane should not be applied to soils in which potatoes are to be grown.
