They are Gary Crawford, Doug las Slagle, Charles Slagle, and Teddy Clark. Ufe rank In Boy Scouting is one step below the coveted Eagle rank. The ranks were bestowed on the local Scouts by John W. Edwards, of Tuckaseigee. formerly of Frank lin. John Crawford and Billy Craw ford, both of Franklin, Troop 1. and David Simpson, of Troop 21 were awarded Star rank. These badges were presented by a local Scout leader, Dr. J. L. Hill, Jr. Kenneth Shepherd, of Franklin. Troop 20 (Liberty), received First Class rank. William A. Roten. of Troop 1, Michael S. Franklin, of Troop 20. and Alvin A. Nicholson, James W. Simpson, and John F. Thorpe, all of Troop 21, were given Tender foot badges. ( Free Automobile Inspection Lane To Operate Here I A free automobile safety in spection lane will operate five days in the county next week as a project to reduce high way accidents. Unlike the state-sponsored in spection lanes of several years ago, it will be entirely volun tary and recommended repairs to automobiles will be left to the discretion of owners. However, "Safety Checked" windshield stickers will be af fixed to those passing the in spection. Vehicles failing to meet the requirement will be Is sued stickers after recommen dations are met. A 10-point check of vehicles Is to be made ? brakes, front lights, rear lights, steering, tires, exhaust system, glass, wind shield wipers, rear view mirror, and horn. With daily hours of 9 a. m. to noon and 1 to 4 p. m., the safe ty lane will be in Franklin on West Main Street, near the R. S. (Dick) Jones home on Mon day, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. For motorists of the High lands area, the check lane will be set up Thursday (same hours as above) on Main Street in Highlands. | Volunteers from civic and j service clubs in the two towns will man the lane. Local motor companies will donate the serv ices of mechanics. The project, which is spon sored by the N. C. Department of Motor Vehicles, is being su pervised by C. Jack Ragan, of Franklin, county safety coordi nator. Groups assisting with the project include the Franklin Lions Club, Highlands Lions Club, Franklin Rotary Club, Franklin Jaycees, and the Vet erans of Foreigh Wars. Mr. Regan said It Is hoped that at least 1,000 automobiles can be checked during the week. Otto P.-T. A. Will Install Officers Tonight At Its last meeting of the school year, the Otto P.-T. A. will hold a covered dish supper tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 at the school. New officers for the coming year will be installed. SOPER HONORED AT CHURCH LUNCHEON Mrs. John Waslllk, Jr., enter tained recently with a "bon voy age" luncheon, honoring Mrs. Ellis Soper, who plans to leave early in June for Bogata, Colom bia, South America. Present were the women of the St. Francis Catholic Church. The luncheon table was deco rated with a "bon voyage" cake and place cards of small paper ships with flags. The honoree was presented a corsage of trillium and fern. After the luncheon, the women worked on items for their sum mer bazaar. Forest Service Will Take Over Road In Albert Mountain Area A lumber road being bulldozed from Albert Mountain to the mouth of Mooney Creek will be taken over by the U. S. Forest Service after the timber operation Is completed and the Service plans to Improve and maintain It, ac cording to Wayah District Ranger William Nothstein.
