Parrish Points Out Soil Bank's Benefits For '58 Macon County Farmers who are thinking ahead on their 1957 plans should keep in mind the benefits they can receive from taking part in next year's Soil Bank programs, Max Parrish. chairman of the Macon County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation committee, said this week. The chairman pointed out that the sigrvup period for the Con servation Reserve is now under way and will continue until Apri] 15, 1958; the sign-up for the Acre age Reserve agreements covering 1958 spring plantings iburley to bacco) will be soon announced. Both Soil Bank programs require the establishment of a Soil Bank "base", Mr. Parrish explained, and it is important that farmers understand the meaning of the term as well as several others. An other term which must be under stood in order to meet require ments of the Soil Bank programs is "permitted acreage". The Soil Bank "base" for a farm is the average of Soil Bank base crops grown on the farm for the two preceding years. (Soil Bank base crops. In general, are all crops harvested on the farm, except hay). "Permitted acreage" is the farm acreage on which Soil Bank crops may be grown without violation of Conservation Reserve contracts or Acreage Reserve contracts cov ering the farm. The permitted acreage is made up of the Soil Bank base acreage less the acre age put into the Acreage and Con servation Reserve programs. Per acre payment rates will be determ ined by the county AS.C. com mittee. The rates will be based on the county "average" rate for all crops except tobacco, but they vary among farms primarily ac cording to the land's relative pro ductivity. Mr. Parrish urges Macon Coun ty farmers who intend to put land into either the Acreage Reserve or the Conservation Reserve to get their Soil Bank bases estab lished as soon as possible. Con tracts and agreements cannot be signed until after the base has been determined by the commit tee. The chairman advices farm ers to call at the county A.S.C. of fice for answers to any questions they may have on the application of Soil Bank regulations to their individual farms.
