What Is Christmas? Ask
And You'll Learn A Lot
What, Indeed, is Christmas?
Ask a child and he may tell
you that it is a time of snow
and bright lights, and Santa
Claus and presents under the'
tree!
Ask a hundred grown-ups and
you may get a hundred slightly
related answers, lor Christmas
Is many things to many people.
But, for all of us, the happiest
memories of childhood are those
associated with the celebration
of this great holiday. How easy
it is to vividly call upon scenes
of long ago when a happy fam- j
ily gathered by the warm glow
of .an open fireside ; to close
the eyes to see again the snow
covered fields and to hear again
the crunching sound of heavy
boots plodding through the
snow and visualize the little
white church on the hill. In the
silence of a darkened room one
can so easily revisit the little
church, breathe again the
aroma of evergreens and burn
ing candles and sense anew the
presence that is so obvious in
the quiet and solemn stillness.
These are the things about
Adults Should
Insist On Toys
That Are Safe
Adults should insist that all toys
they buy or give to children be I
safe ? incapable of causing fire,
shock, or explosion.
Your best assurance of getting
a safe electrical toy is to look for
the UL label or tag on the toy.
Adults should take care also in
purchasing chemical sets for chil
dren. Toys requiring alcohol, kero
sene, gasoline or carbide lamps
may be hazardous in juvenile
hands.
Parents should supervise any
play with electrical toys or toys
involving fuels and chemicals.

Farm Questions
Q. How about the livestock feed
picture for next year? Will it bs
more favorable than this year?
A. The ratio of price of feed
to animal should be a little more
favorable in 1958. The 1957 pro
duction of corn, oats, barley and
milo is estimated at 135 million
tons, about 4 per cent larger than
the abundant supply of last year.
The degree of price change is de
pendent upon government action,
livestock number, and 1958 crop
prospects. >
Q. Just what will be decided in
the December 10 cotton referen
dum?
A. The price at which the 1958
cotton crop \frill be supported
hangs in the balance. If the vote
carries, support prices will be set
somewhere between 75 and 90 per
cent Of parity; if the vote does
not carry supports will drop to
50 per cent of parity.

Christmas that have not cahng

modes and mannerisms of new
generations. These are the
things which reflect the spirit
of Christmas. It Is in the spirit
of love and goodness, of close
communion with God and with
mankind and with it all is mix
ed a sense of awe at the wond
erful miracle brought into be
ing on that first Christmas
night at Bethlehem so long ago.
This is the spirit of Christ

Christmas Events
1 A Christmas tree will be put ti
up in two out of every three d
American homes this year. Yet i>
the trimmed tree, as we know
and use it today, is only about
150 years old in this country.
The Pilgrims forbade Christ
mas celebrations on the grounds
they were pagan. A Massachu
setts law in 1689 subjected, any
one to a fine who observed the
day be feasting, refraining from
work or in any other manner.
It was not until near the end
of the American Revolution
that the Christmas tree took
hold. German immigrants,
. homesick! for the tradition of
their native land, put them up.
We 're entering the
