their 1968 burlejr tobacco acreage
in the Soil Bank.
As of Monday, 18 burley pro- i
ducers had takes this action, ac- ;
cording to Miss Mildred Corbln.

Farmers who participated In the
1957 Acreage Reserve will be eligi
ble for a 10 per cent Increase in
their '58 payment if they desig
nate the same acreage they did
for 1957, she explained.

ever, Miss Corbln urges farmers to
sign as soon as possible since the
$5,195 allocated for Macon Coun
ty might be exhausted before the
deadline.

Huel W. Sorrells, fireman ap
prentice, was graduated February
7 from machinist's mate school
at the U. S. Nayal Training Center
at Great Lakes, 111., according to
the Fleet Home Town News Cen
ter.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Graver W.
Sorrells, of Franklin, during the
12-week course, he was trained in
operation and maintenance of
steam propulsion in ships.
Jimmy Dotson Here
On Navy Leave
Jimmy Dotson. airman appren
tice, US. Navy, is now spending
a leave with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. John Henry Dotson, of Frank
lin.
Jimmy enlisted in September,
1957. and following recruit train
ing at San Diego, Calif., was sent
to class "P" airman school at
1 Norman, Okla. Following gradu
ation from airman school he was
assigned to the U.S. Naval Auxil
iary Air Station at Whiting Field,
Milton, Fla.
Jimmy's brother, Jerry, is now
undergoing recruit training at
Great Lakes, 111.

Pangle Transferred
To Retired List
A veteran Navy chief aviation
machinist's mate, Thomas H. Pan
gle, of Franklin, Route 4, has been
transferred to the Navy's retired
list after completing more than
30 years of honorable service.
Letters of appreciation for his
long service to the Navy have been
forwarded to Mr. Pangle by
Vice Admiral J. L. Holloway, Jr.,
Chief of Naval Personnel, and
Rear Admiral G. C. Crawford,
Commandant, Sixth Naval Dis
trict.
Vice Admiral Holloway's letter
states in part:
"During your long naval career
you have contributed greatly to
the efficiency and morale of the
Navy, and I desire to express the
appreciation of the Navy Depart
ment for your faithful and honor
able service. The part you have
contributed to the Navy's advance

"March Big Month" chairman for
Macon Countr.
His appointment was announ
ced this week by Harry Oibbe of
Ashevllle, chairman for Western
North Carolina.
The "March Egg Month" pro
gram is being conducted on a
state- wide and national basis to
encourage the consumption of
more eggs. The program in North
Carolina is being sponsored by
the State Department of Agri
culture, North Carolina State Col
lege, and the Poultry and Egg
National Board.
Mr. Olbbs terms this program
Important, both to the consumers
In the state and to egg producers.
He added that egg consumption in
North Carolina is low. The average
North Carolinian eats about two
dosen eggs per year less than the
average for the U. S. That means
we need to eat more eggs for
health's sake. Theme of the* pro
gram is "Eggs are right ? morn
ing, noon, and night."
Egg production is an important
Industry in the state. Approxi
mately 80,000 farm families in
North Carolina sell eggs.
A planning meeting, which the
county chairmen will attend, will
be held on Thursday night, Feb
ruary 20. at 7 pjm. at Tingle's
Cafe on Broadway Street in Ashe
ville. Also participating in this
meeting will be the poultry com
mission of the Asheville Agricul
tural Development Council, which
