Demonstration Club Meetings For Week Are Announced Meeting of home demonstration clubs In this county for the coming week have been announced by Mrs. Florence S. Sherrlll, county home demonstration agent. They are as follows: Today (Thursday) : Holly Springs club at 1:30 p. m. with Mrs. Jack Cabe. Friday: Mulberry club at the home of Mrs. Doyle Lous at 1:30 p. m. Monday : Hickory Knoll elub with Mrs. Robert Ledbetter as hostess at 1:30 p. m ; Highlands club In the basement of the Meth odist church at V:30 p. m. Tuesday: Rldgecrest club at 1:30 p. m. with Mrs. Frank Sellers. Wednesday: Cartoogechaye club at 10 a. m. with Mrs. R. D. Fan non. Eugene Cook Ends Navy Schooling; On Leave Here Elmer Cook, son of Clyde Cook, of Franklin, Route 5, recently completed a 12-week course In Navy aviation structural mechan ics fct Memphis, Tenn., and is now spending a leave here. He has been assigned to duty at Whiting Naval Air Station near Pensacola, Fla. Vacant Store First Worship Place For Longview Church A vacant store was used as a place of worship for several months following the organization of the Longview Baptist Church June 28, 1942. The Rev. George A. Cloer was moderator and the Rev. Lester Sorrells was appointed a member of his council to assist in the or ganization of the church. There were 11 charter members, Mrs. Mattie Corbin, Mr. and Mi.;. John Angel, Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Jones, W. R. Stockton, Miss Ruth Anderson, the Rev. Lake Ledford, Freeman Hastings, anil Mr. and Mrs. Ed Ramey. Sorrells Pastor Mr. Sorrells was elected pastor and Mrs. Ramey the church clerk. Ed Ramey was admitted as a dea con from the Watauga Baptist Church. ' At the suggestion of John Angel, the name, Longview, was adopted for the newly-organized church. The Sunday school was organized with Ed Ramey as superintendent. In October, 1942, 12 new mem bers were added to the church roll during a revival conducted by the Rev. .W. L. Sorrells. Building: Plans Plans were soon under way for building a church. Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Hastings donated the land for the building and on Christmas day, 1942, the pastor and several members met and dedicated the lot to God. The build ing was soon started. The work, much of it free labor, progressed rapidly, and on May 13, 1943, the first service was held in the church. The Rev. Lester Sorrells preached the first sermon. The building was virtually com pleted under Mr. Sorrells' leader ship. October 15, 1945, the pastor died. At the time of his death, the church had grown to a mem bership of 49. McGinnis Elected The Rev. S. T. McGinnis was elected pastor in March, 1946, and he served until 1947. The Rev. Arvil Swafford stepped in as pas tor May 25, 1947, and served un til Feb. 12, 1950. Building now completed, the dedication service was held Jan. 29, 1950, with the Rev. W. L. Sor rells preaching the dedicatory ser mon. The Rev. George A. Cloer was elected pastor Feb. 8, 1950, and served until July, 1%62. Several new members were added during his tenure. He was succeeded by the Rev. C. T. Taylor, who served until April 1, 1954, when he resigned to take over the duties of associa tional missionary. As supply pastor, the Rev. W. N. Cook served until June 20, 1954, when the Rev. W. A. Cloer was elected. He is still pastor. . On March 27, 1955, the church voted to build an educational building, which, when completed, will have a baptistry, 15 class rooms, and two dressing rooms.
