Boys of the club voted for red wool Jackets with white leather sleeves. The boys who lettered In a competitive sport for two or more years are eligible to receive Jackets. They are Tommy Adams. Larry Brooks. Htu-old Elliott. Ronald Harper. Jack Hyde. John Kllllan, Bobby Polndexter. Harold Henry, Don Ledford, and Dannv Cagle. The girls chose red wool Jackets trimmed in white. Earning these are Joyce Cabe, Jean Burrell, H^len Setser, Frances Alexander, Leota Beck, Anne Hall, and Claudette Leatherman. The Jackets are expected to ar rive at the school shortly after the Christmas holidays. At a recent meeting at P.H3., senior students who are eligible for membership in the Beta Club, a national honor society, were briefed on what is expected of them as Beta members. Prances Alexander, Kate Buchanan. Jackie Clark. Joann Gibson. Claudette Leatherman. Rebecca Reeves, Nan cy Siler, and Anita Woody are returning members. Those Invited to Join v Include Jean Burrell. Mrs. Lillian Buchanan, librari an at Western Carolina College and an authority on the United Nations, spoke to the seniors and juniors recently on the UN. In her address. Mrs. Buehanan emphasized the (act that all high school students should make plans to visit the UN If at all possible. She declared that schools should teach the principals of Commu nism In order that students may be more prepared to guard against this menace to today's peace. Mrs Buchanan described the UN buildings and briefly explain ed the functions of the United Nations. She discussed the inter preters and other personnel and explained their duties in the UN. In other highlights of the ad dress. Mrs. Buchanan related personal experiences concerning the UN. * * ? P.H.S. conducted two fire drills in the space of approximately five minutes last Friday morning. The drills were designed to short en the time needed to clear the building. The students and faculty cleared the building in one minute and twenty seconds in the secortd drill. ? ? ? The Individual pictures made by Strawbridge Studios, of Dur ham. were returned last week and F. H. S. has been a busy place as students "swapped out" pic tures with their friends. Mrs. Mamie flc roggs. attended the dis trict meeting of the North Caro lina High School Library Associ ation in Ashevllle at Lee H. Ed wards High School November 14. Approximately 200 student li brary assistants with their ad visors were present. Raymond Southard, high school senior from Franklin, who was district treas urer. gave the financial report. Steve Bundy and Nancy Jane Burch were chosen as official voting delegates from Franklin. Sara Jameson, of Enka, was elect ed president of the western dis trict for the year 1958-59. According to statewide studies made in 1957 of over 1500 home demonstration club members, only 43.3 per cent of the women. 53.8 per cent of the men. and (9.6 per cent of the children un der 20 years of age consume more than two glasses of milk per day.
