"One of her greatest contribu tions to tbe rural women of our state has been the development of leadership In home demonstra tion work. Her leadership train ing has spread far Into many other groups, as the home dem onstration leaders serve in other fields. The high quality of her work has not only been recognized and appreciated by the women of Halifax County, but by women throughout the state." said the Halifax County Home Demonstra tion Club women. FIKM BELIEVES Mrs. Preston Massey, of frank lin County. Is now a firm believer in following instructions for free* in* vegetables, reports Assistant Home Economics Agent Winnlfred Wiggins. "My family had not cared about froxen corn or butter beans. After I attended the frown food clinic in Bunn last April, I decided to plant the varieties of corn and butter beans that are recommend ed for freezing," said Mrs. Massey. When the vegetables were "lost right" for freezing, Mrs. Massey followed established procedures with amazing results. According to the Muwy family, the frozen vegetables are equal In quality to those picked fresh from the garden. Many of the Mnssey's neigh bors received vegetables frozen by the homemaker. The family has 40 quarts of corn and almost an other 40 quarts of butter beans for delicious eating this winter. It 1* felt that, through these clubs, project work can and will be strengthened. FRIED CHICKEN A delicious benefit fried chicken dinner was prepared and served by the women of 12 Wilson Coun ty Home Demonstration Clubs. Home Economics Agent Ona Humphrey said the recipient of this donation of (228.32 is the Lois Rainwater Educational Loan Fund, which is sponsored by the 25 home demonstration clubs in this county. "Not only are we proud of the money raised, but we are pleased to see club members from differ ent parts of the county work together and enjoy the fellowship which is always present on such occasions," reported ilrs. Charles Boykln, treasurer of the fund. FLOWER GARDENS One of 'the outstanding projects carried on by the Negro Home i Demonstration Clubs in Craven County, is community flower gar dens. Negro Home Economics Agent Marie Jones said flowers of differ ent varieties were donated by the club members: then cultivated by | them. As the flowers matured, they were given to the local churches to serve as part of the decorations for Sunday services, weddings and funerals. Mrs. Sudte Bell Rhodes, Cove City Home Demonstration Club member, reported that the gar dens in their community were still furnishing beautiful chrysan themums in assorted colors. CANNING HOUSE A "canning house" is the pride of Mrs. Lonta Cogging. Mountain Page community, Henderson County. When her home was included in an expanding watershed two years ago. she was able to pur chase other property in the com munity. There was a small house and garage on the new property. After making many changes in her new homesite. Mrs. Cogglns developed the garage Into a cann ing house. The old wood stove is there and water is handy. It Is close to the house, but it. keeps the heat and confusion away from the house. She has ample room to work, as well as, room to store her canning supplies.
