BETTY CRAWFORD iStaff Correspondent) The new Ridgecrest Baptist Church building was dedicated Sunday, June 7. with the pastor, the Rev. Thad R. Dowdle, deliver ing the dedication sermon. This is the second building the church has occupied since it was founded in 1925. * ?Charlie Smith gave the land on wtiich the original church was built. The old church was torn down and the present one was erected on the same site. While it was under construction, mem bers held services in Crawford's Service Station buildings and, therefore, never missed a servio;. The building fund was started in October 1952, and work began on the building in October 1956 The actual amount of money spent from the fund was only $16,000, while the estimated value of the structure is $30,000. This was du? to donations of materials and labor by individuals and busi nesses. The building consists of a sanctuary and two classrooms up stairs, and six classrooms and two bathrooms are located in the base ment. Three of the downstairs classrooms can be opened up to form the kitchen and social activ ity room. Norwood Powell Montgomery, both of Charlotte, has been announced. Miss Benbow, daugh ter of Mrs. Jay L. Benbow and the late Mr. Benbow, is a graduate of Pfeiffer College and was co-worker with Miss Margaret Wilson in Methodist summer work here in 1955, and then was summer rural work er here last summer. Mr. Montgomery, who was graduated this. month from Duke University Divinity School, was assistant pastor at the Highlands and Cashiers Methodist Churches last summer. The wed ding is planned for September. The first pastor to serve the church was the Rev. W. L. Bradley. J. N. Downs was Sunday school superintendent and Austin Snyder w;as church clerk. The first dea cons were Gordon Smith, Bufora Downs, and T. N. Snyder. Gordon Smith, the only living deacon of the original group, is now chair man of the present board of deacons, Serving with him are Lawson Snyder, Jim Thompson. Sam Saunders, John Seay. Clyde Downs, Wiley Sellers, and Davis Morgan. The present Sunday school superintendent is Sam ? ! Saunders, church clerk, Mrs. Jeter Higdon, and Training Union director, J. R. Berry.
