"Operation Bootstrap" is gettin?
ready to roll, although collection

FRANKLIN, N. C.
the directors of the Western North
Carolina Industrial Development
Corporation reached these de
cisions:
1. There is enough money now
on hand to purchase a mobile
trailer and a four-wheel drive
truck to pull it. These two items
will be purchased and the inside
of the trailer will be equipped
as the remaining money allows.
"This will give 'Operation Boot
strap' something tangible," ex
plains Heinz Rollman, president,
"and will show the people who
have contributed to the fund that
we really mean business, although
we haven't yet received as much
money as we had hoped to."
2. Once the trailer is equipped
and ready to roll, it will be driven
by reprseentatives of W.N.C.I.D.C.
through all the participating coun
ties so the people who contributed
their 33 cents to the industrial
promotion program can see what
their money is doing. In con
junction with this, a continued
effort will be made to raise
enough money to send the "Opera
tion Bootstrap" trailer on its
journey through the United States
on its appointed task of "selling"
the rest of the country on the
industrial and touri-' potential of
Western North Carol-.ia.
Mr. Rollman said "the idea of
'Operation Bootstrap' seems to ap
peal so much to editors and tele
vision people that there seems to
be a very good chance that som?
of the very popular TV programs
might feature the trailer exhibit
when it goes to New Yotk or
Chicago, and certain magazines
are interested in writing feature
stories with pictures."
The trailer will be filled Willi
products made by Western North
Carolina labor. Also, it will be
staffed by a competent director
who will be armed with industrial
facts and figures to help with his
selling job.
Rabun County
Gets Federal
Assistance
Neighboring Rabun County. Ga?
has received approval of federal
assistance for a watershed project
on the' head of the Little Tennes
see River.
Up until about a year ago., Ma
con County and Rabun had been
jointly seeking the assistance. Be
cause of an apparent lack of in
terest here, however, Macon
withdrew and the Georgia county
submitted its own application.
Of the 90.000 acres embraced
by the Little Tennessee watershed
in both counties. Macon has
roughly two-thirds, according to
the local Soil Conservation Serv
ice.
Rabun County's assistance will
be in the form of a five-year pro
ject to provide flood protection
on a 36,700 acre watershed. A
I local and federal undertaking, the
total cost of the project Is esti
] mated at $457,000. The federal
j i.hare will be about $273,000.
The Soil Con.srevatioi), Servlc"
here feels there may be enough
j interest in another year or so for
Macon County to submit an up
plication. ?
