The United Way is the most economical way. * It helps more people, saves more lives. * More than 2,100 communities have demanded it. * The United Way coordinates fund raising with commun* ity planning. * People benefit when agencies are able to devote full time to services without having to take time out to raise their own funds. EVERYBODY KNOWS that the United Way of Giving makes sense ? BUT did you know that ? United Community Campaigns include 2,100 local United Funds and Community Chests in the United States and Canada. Most of these once-a-ye?r campaigns are held between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. Funds raised by local United Funds and Community Chests are used to help support 27,700 individual agencies. More than 77,44)0,000 persons ? more than one-third our popu lation ? benefit from services of thesea gencies. EVERYBODY GIVES Last year, the American public, through individual and cor porate gifts, contributed an all-time high of $423,000,000 to support these services the United Way. This is the largest community-wide voluntary effort in the world. Individual contributions represent approximately 65 per cent of the total, 35 per cent coming from corporate gifts. Fund raising costs in all local campaigns average 4.1 per cent of the total raised, and year-round expenses average 2.9 per cent. 17,540,000 local volunteers run these oampaigns, manage the funds, and guide the year-round operation of the agencies.
